Mayor wants meat processing unit shifted from Auto Nagar

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: Mayor Yallappa Kurbar has said that he will not give up his efforts to get the meat processing unit shifted from the residential area in Auto Nagar.

He told The Hindu here on Monday that the unit caused pollution. People living in the localities near the unit had alleged that animal waste was being dumped into a lake between Auto Nagar and Kanbargi. Because of this, water was contaminated and foul smell emanated from the lake.

There had been no convincing response for his pleas from the district administration to shift the unit. However, it promised him recently that a solution would be found within a month to the issue. The issue was discussed in the Belgaum City Corporation Council meeting recently.

The civic body had adopted a resolution in the past supporting the demand of the residents of Auto Nagar and Kanbargi. Mr. Kurbar said he would meet the Deputy Commissioner soon and urge him either to shift or order the closure of the unit.
