Chennai, July 27: Marina beach may celebrate its share of ‘independence’ this year on August 15.

The Chennai corporation has decided to ban plastic on the beach stretch from the Independence Day, mayor M. Subramanian said here on Monday.

At an interactive session with vendors at the beach, the mayor said that plastic wastes littered around the beach were posing threat to public.

Besides harming the ecosystem, plastic can lead to cancer and several nervous disorders.

“The only option available is that people should stop using plastic,” the mayor said and asked the vendors to refrain from selling food items packed in plastic.

Corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said that being non-biodegradable, plastic will remain in the soil for centuries preventing water from getting absorbed into the ground.

“The Corporation will take the issue seriously and our main objective is to prevent this environmental hazard. We have also planned to conduct awareness programmes to educate the vendors on the harmful effects of plastic,” Mr Lakhoni added.
