Water purification plant at Marina

New facility: Beach goers drink from the water purification plant that was inaugurated on the Marina beach on Tuesday.
CHENNAI: Students of 25 more Chennai schools will get access to safe drinking water this year as voluntary organisations have come forward to install purification plants, Mayor M.Subramanian said here on Tuesday.
He was inaugurating a water purification plant installed by the Lions Clubs International District 324 A1 near Labour Statue on the Marina Beach. The facility, installed at a cost of Rs.9 lakh, could treat 9,000 litres of water every day. Nearly 40,000 people visit the beach every day.
Apart from installing a similar plant at the Dr. Visveswaraya Tower Park in Anna Nagar, the Lions Clubs International District 324 A1 would also be providing such facilities in schools at a cost of Rs.2.50 lakh each this year. It has set up a similar facility near the Mahatma Gandhi Statue on the beach, Mr.Subramanian said.
A park is also being created on Spurtank Road with the support of Lions Clubs International, he said.
The Corporation is also constructing three toilet blocks on the Marina at a total cost of Rs.66 lakh.
T. Bhakthavatsalam, District governor, Lions Clubs International District 324 A1, said 68 water purification plants have been installed in various places, including Corporation and government schools in the past three years.
