50,000 new SHGs planned this fiscal

Coimbatore: The Government is making efforts to form 50,000 new women's self-help groups (SHG) during this fiscal. Of which 30,000 would be in rural areas and 20,000 in urban areas, said Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Women's Development Corporation, K. Gopal on Tuesday.

He was speaking at a meeting organised to review the implementation of schemes for women. Mr. Gopal said that in Coimbatore, 1,650 women's SHG would be formed. He asked elected representatives of local bodies and voluntary organisations to strive for the effective functioning of these SHGs .

Mr. Gopal said that those working under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and tribals should be roped into these SHGs, he said.

Fund

A total of 70,000 women SHGs in Tamil Nadu would be provided with revolving fund and loans. Each SHG would get a revolving fund of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 60,000 as loan. Under the SGSY scheme, self-help groups would be provided with loans ranging from Rs. 1.5 lakhs to Rs. 5 lakhs.

Best performing SHG would get Rs. 1 lakh as incentive from the Government.

In addition, the State Government has planned to train 25,000 youth with the assistance of industrial training institutions and private institutions.

Talks are on with bankers to ensure financial assistance of Rs. 3,000 crore for these SHGs.
