GHMC area legislators to discuss traffic problems

HYDERABAD: Home Minister P. Sabitha Reddy has said the government will soon convene a meeting with the legislators of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area to identify solutions to end traffic problems in the city and its peripheral areas.

Replying to a question tabled by D. Surender Reddy (Congress) in the Assembly on Monday, the Minister said already various efforts were being made in line with the recommendations of a committee of officials drawn from Police and Transport Departments, civic body and APSRTC, to streamline traffic. These included construction of flyovers wherever required and widening of roads. The committee was formed following a study made by engineers and the erstwhile HUDA.

The Minister said at present, 99 digital cameras had been installed at as many traffic junctions to regulate traffic during peak hours of 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. As recommended by the committee, no private heavy vehicle was being allowed into the city limits from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Several works had been completed with a huge sum of Rs. 23 crore under the Rs. 35-crore Charminar pedestrianisation programme.

She said 21 foot over-bridges were being constructed in different localities now.
