WORK APACE: Underground drainage work in Nagapattinam being inspected.

NAGAPATTINAM: Work on underground drainage scheme is under way here. The 90-km-long sewerage pipeline project funded by the World Bank was initially sanctioned Rs.49.43 crore by the State government in 2007. However, the project has been re-conceived with revised estimates of Rs.62.34 crore.

The project, implemented by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) envisages creation of 3,418 manholes and nine pumping stations. The pumping stations would be connected to two sewage treatment plants at Kottaivasal in Nagapattinam and Jaffer Park in Nagore.

Collector C. Munianathan, after inspecting the works with S.Rajendran, Executive Engineer, TWAD Board, directed officials to construct alternative pathways for smooth flow of traffic. Red reflector barricades would be set up to signal dug manholes. Workers have been instructed to ensure that the dug holes are closed immediately after the works are completed. As of date, 10 manholes in Vedanayagam Chetty Street, 18 on Pandian Theatre Road, along with a 60-metre-long sewage collection pipe are under construction. The Kottaivasal plant would have a treatment capacity for 9.36 million litres a day, and the Jaffer Park unit 2.96 million litres.
