Alagiri reviews Corporation works

MADURAI: The multi-storeyed apartments constructed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board at Melavasal would be opened on October 3, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri has said.

After chairing a meeting with officials of the Corporation here on Wednesday, Mr. Alagiri said that the foundation stone laying ceremony for various beautification works to be taken up in the city at a cost of Rs. 12.55 crore would also be conducted on the same day.

Among the works, were construction of a multi-level car-parking to accommodate 500 cars at a cost of Rs. 4.62 crore, shopping complex at Kunnathur Chatram at a cost of Rs. 2.32 crore, setting up of decorative lamps around Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple at a cost of Rs. 42 lakh and improvement of the Meenakshi Park near the temple at a cost of Rs. 35.24 lakh and beautification of Vilakkuthoon at a cost of Rs. 2.6 crore.

Other works are putting up signage boards leading the tourists to important tourist destinations, improvement of the Fort where the present Corporation South Zone office is located.

Bridges planned

Earlier, during the review meeting, the officials said that Madurai Corporation had planned construction of bridges at Goripalayam, Kalavasal, Palanganatham and Anna Nagar junctions.

The proposal has been sent to the State Government for approval.

The Minister asked the officials to immediately re-lay roads in the city, where drinking water pipe laying and underground drainage pipe laying works were taken up.

Mr. Alagiri instructed them to conduct the auction for retail shops at the new Central Vegetable Market at Mattuthavani in a fair manner.

Ward visit

The Minister also ordered Mayor G. Thenmozhi and Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan to visit one ward every day to attend the problems faced by the people immediately.

Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine, Chief Engineer K. Sakthivel, Sholavandan MLA, P. Moorthy and North South Zone Chairman K. Esakkimuthu were among those present.
