Council gives nod for third and final phase of work

The second phase of construction is under way

Of 2.42-km work, 600 metres completed so far


Tuticorin: State Government has allotted funds to the tune of Rs. 4.30 crore for the third phase of Buckle Canal construction in Tuticorin. Presiding over the emergency meeting convened at Corporation council hall here on Monday, Mayor R. Kasthuri Thangam announced about the allocation of funds for continuing the infrastructural development of the canal.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors welcomed the announcement by thumping the desks. 

The council gave the approval for the third and final phase of construction work, to be taken up on a stretch of 1.1 km under the corporation limits.

The second phase of construction is underway. Of the 2.42 km work, 600 metres had been completed so far under phase two.

A sum of Rs. 7.5 crore had been set aside for the second phase of works.

The Mayor also gave her nod for tender disposal of relaying the road work, subsequently.

As for road infrastructure, the State government had sanctioned Rs. 20 crore. Since the season was rainy, roads would be re-laid from December 15. Prior to the road strengthening project, cement roads would be laid at eighteen places.

Works to this effect would be taken up in a span of a week. 25 noon meal centres would be established in various parts at an estimated cost of Rs. 75 lakh and an approval was also given for this.

C. Easwaran, AIADMK councillor of ward 32, said that residents could not get drinking water every two or three days in a week and it was being supplied once in six or even seven days.

The Mayor replied it was due to a breakdown in the main pipeline at Vallanad.

Maintenance works were being carried out and the problem would be solved at the earliest, Ms. Thangam said. With the help of tanker lorries, the residents, were supplied with water, she added.

S. Madasamy, DMK councillor of ward 37, sought the attention of authorities to stop burning the wastages in all wards.

He said the smoke caused pollution.

Thommai Yesuvadiyan, Deputy Mayor, P. Kubendran, Commissioner of Corporation, S.A. Rajagopalan, Executive Engineer of Corporation were present.
