Design for multi-level bike parking at Parry’s to be presented today

CHENNAI: The two decades old plan for a multi-storey parking facility in Flower Bazaar will take a step forward on Friday when Mahindra Consultants will present to the corporation a layout for the bike parking facility.

The facility will come up next to the Flower Bazaar police station. It will have around 30,000 sqft of built-up area across four floors. It will have a capacity to park 650 bikes, but not any for cars. "The facility will cater to those going to shops within a 250-metre radius of the building," said an engineer from the consulting company. "We did extensive surveys to find out if people will be willing to ride four floors to park vehicles. The results were positive," he said.

At the behest of the Chennai Corporation, the project was designed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services (TNUIFSL) with World Bank funds. The quasi-government body called for consultants for the project. Based on the design TNUIFSL provides, the corporation will build and maintain the facility. "Though the parking facility will relieve the situation to an extent, I feel that the demand for parking is far greater than what the facility can provide," said an official.

The corporation is yet come up with a pricing policy for the facility. "Though the project will be economically viable, we need to consider the cost while coming up with the fees," said corporation commissioner D Karthikeyan. The consultants will also make presentations on the multi-level car parking facility near Panagal Park in T Nagar.

Experts say such a facility alone may not help. "On-street parking should be strictly controlled and there should be an incentive to make people use the parking facility," said Raj Cherubal of Chennai City Connect.
