Drainage vents inspected

not Gushing: Corporation officials inspecting the outlet of the ‘Keezh Pokki’ vent near the Uyyakondan river in Tiruchi on Tuesday.

TIRUCHI: A team of Corporation officials led by Mayor S.Sujatha on Tuesday inspected the ‘Keezh Pokki,’ the drainage vents near Karumandapam in the city, in the wake of persistent demands from residents of the region seeking improvements to the structures to prevent flooding of residential colonies during the monsoon.

Residents of several colonies off the Dindigul Road have long been demanding that the vents, which serve as vital drains at times of floods, and the drainage channels leading up to them be cleared and widened.

The vents through which the floodwaters drain into the Uyyakondan River were often found to be choked and inadequate to handle the huge flood discharges. The drainage channels leading to the vents have also shrunk. Residents have been demanding construction of additional vents at the spot and wanted it to be included as a component under the flood control project sanctioned for the city.

Ms.Sujatha, accompanied by Deputy Mayor M.Anbazhagan and Commissioner T.T.Balsamy, inspected the vents and also the residential colonies around it. City Engineer S.Raja Mohammed, Executive Engineer R.Chandran and other officials were also present.

Further discussions are expected between the Corporation and the district officials on addressing the demand.
