Government schools may get solar power

Vellore Corporation plans to install solar power systems at Corporation schools, for which a feasibility study would be conducted shortly.

The Education Committee attached to the Corporation had identified five schools, including three high schools in Kosapet, Salavanpet and Kaspa, located at important locations in the city, to provide generators.

President of the committee and councillor of ward-41, K Suriya Achari, said, “At the recent Education Committee meeting, officials discussed the feasibility of providing Corporation schools with generators. However, some of them had noted that this would lead to the issue of maintenance of the generators. So, we decided to install solar power systems, which was also being encouraged by the State government.”

Corporation Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran said a feasibility study would be conducted in the schools once the examinations were over. At schools where the study gives positive results, the Corporation has decided to carry out the installation work during the summer holidays and complete the work before the schools reopen for the next academic year.
