Solid waste management goes to private firm

As part of its efforts to get Nagercoil a ‘clean and garbage-free town’ tag, the Municipal Council has handed over solid waste management to a private firm.

The new solid waste management scheme was inaugurated by Municipal Chairperson M. Meena Dev at a function here on Wednesday.

Later she said the implementation of solid waste management in 34 wards of the total 52 wards in the municipality had been entrusted to the private firm to convert the town into one of the clean towns in the State. The 34 wards would be divided into three zones for the successful implementation of the programme and the effective functioning of the workers.

The first zone would cover wards 3, 4, and 26 to 29 and 45; the second zone would comprise wards 8 to 11, 30 to 34 and 13: and the third zone would include wards 12, 20 to 23, 40 to 42 and 46 to 52.

As many as 258 workers would be pressed into service to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in the town.

Of the total workers, 178 would handle man-made garbage carrier. The work would begin from Thursday, said Ms.Meena Dev.

Vice-Chairman Simon Raj, Commissioner Rajan, Municipal Engineer George and other officials attended the function.
