Work on the Rs.40.49-crore underground sewerage scheme (UGSS) being executed in Vellore Corporation is expected to be completed by the end of March 2014, according to R. Nanthagopal, Collector of Vellore.

He was talking to reporters here on Tuesday after inspecting the work on laying pipelines for the UGSS in the fourth reach of the project area on Katpadi Road, forming part of Mangalore-Villupuram NH 234.

Mr. Nanthagopal said that out of the total length of 3.664 km to be covered by the scheme on NH 234 (from National Theatre junction to Velappadi), the 900-metre stretch from National Theatre junction to Makkan has been taken up about a month ago for laying pipelines and construction of manholes.

Work on this stretch is expected to be completed by the second week of January, after which the work from Makkan junction to Velappadi would be taken up.

In all, 21 manholes would be constructed in the fourth reach. Asked about restoration work of the roads under the control of State Highways where work of laying pipelines has been completed, the Collector said that the restoration work would be taken up soon.

Janaki Raveendran, Commissioner of Vellore Corporation, said that the Corporation has deposited a sum of Rs. four crore with the National Highways and Rs. two crore with the State Highways for restoration of the roads which were dug up for laying of the pipelines for UGSS.
