Tuticorin to be free from garbage
A team of officials from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) visited Tuticorin on Friday and conducted a feasibility study to set up a solid waste management plant under the corporation limits.
A team led by J. Daniel Chellappa, senior scientist at the Technical Coordination Wing of BARC, along with Commissioner of Tuticorin Corporation S. Madhumathi inspected sites at Cruzpuram and State Bank Colony here.
To generate energy from waste and establish a garbage-free Tuticorin, the BARC has embarked on a solid waste management project. For biogas production from waste, he said the BARC had introduced Nisargruna technology, through which expertise could be shared with stakeholders. The DRDA had prepared a detailed project report to establish a Nisargruna plant at Tharuvaikulam, where a compost yard was located.
Primarily, organic manure could be derived from waste and methane gas would be a by-product from biodegradable waste, he said. Three cylinders of methane gas and 100 kg of organic manure could be produced from a tonne of waste.
