Corporation to supply water once in two days

The new plan to be implemented from August 15 in 72 wards

Rains in catchment areas of Periyar dam in the last few days has brought good news for Madurai city. Since the water level had gone up in Vaigai dam after the recent rains, the Madurai Corporation has decided to supply drinking water once in two days starting from August 15.

Presently, it is being supplied once in four days in view of bad monsoon and lack of rainfall in the region.

Corporation Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa has announced on Wednesday that the water supply situation was thoroughly reviewed based on the city’s requirements for all 100 wards.

“The water level had increased to 41.63 feet in the Vaigai dam. Similarly, the Vaigai dam is getting 1,036 mcft of water from Periyar dam after the rains in catchment areas. Hence, the Madurai Corporation has decided to ease the supply,” he said in a press release.

To start with, the once-in-two-days water supply plan will be implemented from August 15 in 72 wards which were in the corporation earlier.

From August 17, the drinking water supply would be comfortable covering all areas in the city.

Mr.Rajan Chellappa further said that the 28 wards which were added to the corporation as extension areas in the peripheries of the city too will be taken care of.

Here, water will be supplied through a fleet of tankers as is being done now and more focus will be laid to ensure smooth supply as per requirements, the Mayor added.

The Mayor’s announcement comes within days of corporation council meeting when councillors urged the authorities to address drinking water scarcity in their respective wards.
