Corporation opens videographing centre

Madurai Corporation has opened a permanent centre in each of the respective zones for videographing the public for issuing Aadhaar cards.

Inaugurating the centre at Melavasal (ward number 78 covered in zone 4), Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa said on Monday that the Aadhar cards had been issued to residents in the city limits for the last four years as per the 2010 voter list. To ensure that every eligible citizen was covered, the Corporation had planned to open one permanent centre in each of its four zones to enable the public in the locality to get themselves videographed without much trouble.

The centre, he said, would function for five days at Melavasal ward office. Residents in zone IV could utilise the centre for videographing purpose. Apart from the Corporation staff, teachers from Corporation schools were also being deployed for this assignment as a special duty.

Persons above five years of age were eligible for obtaining the Aadhar cards and they would have to appear in person for videographing, the Mayor said, adding for public convenience, one specific centre would be earmarked in each of the four zones.

According to Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan, for those residing in zone I, ward 17 (Ellis Nagar) would be the centre for videographing. Similarly, in zone II, ward 46 (Lourdu Nagar) had been identified as the centre for videographing. In zone III, ward 67 (Manjanakara Street) and in zone IV ward 78 (Melavasal) would be the centres, he said.

Initially, residents covered under zone IV could visit Melavasal till November 17 and get themselves videographed. The arrangement for other zones (date and timings) would be announced shortly.

An official coordinating the videographing for Aadhar cards said that so far, 72 per cent of the eligible persons in Madurai Corporation had been covered and it would be ideal for the remaining 28 per cent of the populace to visit the respective centres in their zones for videographing. He also clarified that persons who had obtained the Aadhar cards through private contractors earlier could appear before the centres now and get it formalised through the local body.

Very shortly, the newly covered wards in Madurai Corporation – Avaniapuram, Tirupparankundram and Anaiyur would also be provided with similar permanent centres, he added.
