Corporation to set up 60 centres to issue Aadhaar cards

Chennai Corporation is set to open permanent enrolment centres for issuing Aadhaar cards in 60 locations across the city.

After suspending its earlier scheme for Aadhaar in many parts of the city a few months ago, the civic body officials have begun work on opening the centres to collect biometric data from residents.

All zonal offices have received instructions to commission two sets of biometric hardware immediately in each of the permanent enrolment centres.

“Each set of biometric devices will capture data from at least 75 residents a day. If residents cooperate, the number could be increased to 110 a day. At least 220 residents are likely to give biometric data in each centre every day,” said an official.

The civic body has completed two rounds of enrolment in the city.

More than half of the city’s residents are yet to get Aadhaar cards.

Residents will be able to get information on the location of the centres through the Corporation helpline 1913 after the enrolment drive begins.

A number of residents however voiced concerns about the various issues associated with the Aadhaar card. Retired bureaucrat M.G. Devasahayam said, “There is no privacy of data. Some people seem to be able to force the government to collect biometric data, but we have to develop our own system” he said.
