Tiruchi to get 13 Livelihood Centres
The Tiruchirappali City Corporation plans to set up City Hope Centres and Common Livelihood Centres at 13 places to generate employment for urban poor people.
It will facilitate them to utilise the machines, tools, and facilities at the centres, which are common to all. A sum of Rs. 2.5 crore had been sought under the Challenge Fund from the Ministry of Housing and Poverty Alleviation.
A senior official of the corporation recently told The Hindu that common dry wash centre, common tailoring centre, common production centre for low-cost sanitary napkin, bath soap and detergent powder were established. The centres would have facilities for food products. There was a move to set up canteen in the livelihood centres.
There was a strong need for concerted efforts to empower the poor and vulnerable people, who were left out in the poverty reduction initiatives. A network, consisting corporation, non-governmental organisations, and other institutions, would be created to identify resources, job opportunities, financial links, training, and related activities. Once the project was sanctioned, steps would be taken to identify the target groups through a participatory approach. The beneficiaries could be either unemployed individuals and groups identified from the urban poor of 286 slums. They would be categorised into groups for providing support appropriate skill training, employment opportunities, and marketing links.
He said the centres would have sewing and embroidery machines, electrical iron boxes for common tailoring centre, dry washing machines, and electric iron boxes for common dry washing centre, cooking equipment, utensils, RO water purification plant for low-cost meal centre, and so on.
