A new awareness drive to enforce plastic ban

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Not in the mood to fine or book those violating the ban on using plastics in the Capital just yet, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee proposes to carry out a massive awareness drive giving Delhiites a chance to comply.

Over six months after the ban on plastic bags was notified, the Government is yet to seriously implement it. “We haven’t started penalising violators though action is being taken to ensure that there is awareness about it. We are carrying out a huge awareness programme after which we will start taking action,” said a senior State Environment Department official.

“We have held meeting with various implementing agencies and will be reviewing the progress they have made in terms of spreading awareness. Then we will decide when to start taking action against violators.”

The DPCC held a meeting with various implementing agencies and is working out the details on how to make the ban work in the city.

Welcoming the ban on plastic and hoping that it will bring in a positive change in the city, environmentalist Vinod Jain said: “The Government has introduced the ban after much lobbying and we are looking forward to its implementation. We have waited for six months to see actual work being done. We need the government to get tough and take action to ensure that we reap the benefits of the ban.”
