Report to upgrade roads to be ready in six months

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: A detailed project report (DPR) to upgrade the 407-km city roads into international standards at an estimated outlay of Rs. 400 crore would be readied in another six months.

This was announced by the representatives of the private consultants entrusted by the government with the preparation of DPR for improving roads within the Tirupur Corporation limits under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project, at the Corporation council meeting here on Thursday.

The project was expected to be completed within three years from the date of commencement of work.

Answering the queries of the councillors, DPR preparation team head R. Natarajan said four layers comprising granular sub base, wet mix macadam, bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete would be laid to ensure a life span of 30 years. “Of course, minor wear and tear will occur which would be repaired periodically,” he added.

To avoid periodic digging of the road surface, separate ducts would be provided for telephone and electricity cables beneath the road surface with openings at appropriate intervals to carry out any repairs.

Pavements with railings and greenery along the road sides would be provided wherever it was possible.

The councillors, cutting across the party lines, criticised the Corporation administration for not showing adequate interest to address the grievances of public on general utilities.

“Despite pointing out, sewage has been stagnating in many areas in Ward 48 from where Mayor K. Selvaraj got elected,” S. Sivabalan (MDMK) pointed out. He said owing to lack of coordination among the health officials, the city had become ‘mosquito city’ replacing its ‘textile city’ tag.
