CHENNAI: With a view to fulfil growing housing needs in the Chennai metropolitan area, the State government is planning a public-private partnership(PPP) venture with those owners who have more than 100 acres with them.

Announcing new schemes while replying on the demands of grants for housing and urban development, Suba Thangavelan, Minister for Slum Clearance and Accommodation Control, said that the proposed scheme would enable the State government to develop house sites and construct houses to meet the growing demand. Besides, the Minister also announced schemes like listing and protecting of heritage monuments in the city by CMDA and setting up of a separate zonal planning authority to facilitate building permissions along ECR from Neelangarai to Puducherry. He said the government has decided to grant powers to local bodies (except Chennai metropolitan area) to issue building permission for constructing buildings within 4,000 sqft or for four tenements.
