Illegal slaughterhouses closed down in Ranchi

RANCHI: Many illegal slaughterhouses were closed down in Ranchi on Thursday as the 72 hours ultimatum ended today.

“Who will employ me at this age? We will leave this work if the government provides us jobs,” Sarwar Ali,  an illegal slaughterhouse owner told ANI.

The Jharkhand Government earlier on Monday issued an order for closure of all illegal slaughterhouses in the state within 72 hours.

The government’s decision came on the heels of a demand by right wing organizations including Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM), Bajrang Das and Jharkhand Gau Raksha Dal, for a blanket ban on slaughterhouses.

Jharkhand Urban Development Minister C.P. Singh earlier on Tuesday also wrote letter to the Chief Minister Raghubar Das appealing to shut down the illegal slaughter houses.

The move came at a time when the state of Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a ban on illegal slaughterhouses.

Corporation Budget passed amid uproar

Graft in property tax collection alleged

The city Corporation’s annual Budget for 2017-18 was passed by the Corporation council on Tuesday with 44 votes in favour of the Budget against 35 in opposition.

With the Budget discussion marred by allegations of corruption raised by the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling LDF refuting the charges, the councillors of the United Democratic Front (UDF) staged a walkout, with Beemapally Rasheed saying that amidst the allegations, the UDF was being denied its chance to comment on the Budget.

A major concern expressed by the Opposition was the sum of Rs. 50 crore to be collected as arrears in property tax, with councillors alleging that many large enterprises in the city had not been making tax payments.

In response to this, Deputy Mayor Rakhi Ravikumar said the Corporation would initiate revenue recovery proceedings to collect tax arrears as part of a special drive, and the Revenue estimates would be revised by reducing the tax amount that cannot be recovered.

New proposals in the budget regarding an exhibition fee from cable TV operators and a vacant plot cess, which had faced severe opposition from the BJP and UDF, would not be implemented unless the council unanimously supported the proposal, the Deputy Mayor said.

Allegations

It was brought to the notice of the council that the Tax Appeal standing committee, chaired by Simi Jyothish of the BJP, had allowed concessions in several property tax appeals without the permission of the Corporation Secretary or the council. Out of an estimate of Rs. 6.98 crore charged in taxes, only around Rs. 1.90 crore was collected by the committee.

While the BJP councillors defended the move, the LDF and UDF councillors reproached it, citing the Kerala Municipality Act, under which such concessions can be made only by the Corporation Secretary based on the recommendations of the Tax Appeal standing committee.

Following a heated discussion on the matter, Mayor V.K. Prasanth agreed to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

Thane Corporation seals 72 Reliance cellular towers

Cracking the whip:TMC officials seal Reliance cellulartowers in Thane on Thursday.Special Arrangement

Company failed to pay Rs. 18.72 crore in property tax dues

The Thane Municipal Corporation on Thursday sealed 72 out of the 80 cellular service towers installed by Reliance Communications.

On Wednesday, TMC Commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal issued instructions to seal all 80 towers in the city after the company failed to pay Rs. 18.72 crore in accumulated property tax dues since 2011-2012. “We initiated the sealing process on Thursday morning, and by evening, had sealed 72 of the 80 towers. The action will continue till all the towers are sealed,” TMC Public Relations Officer Sandeep Malvi said.

On Thursday afternoon, a team of representatives from Reliance Communications visited the Thane Corporation headquarters and met senior civic officials.

Sources said the TMC’s top brass made it clear that the sealing would not stop, and it would be undone only after Reliance paid all of its pending dues.

HC, SC dismiss pleas

The TMC’s action came after a series of repeated reminders to Reliance Communications as well as a court battle. The company had earlier moved the Bombay High Court seeking that it should not have to pay property tax, but its petition was dismissed by the HC, and by the Supreme Court subsequently.

Following the SC order, which came in February this year, the TMC had issued one more reminder to Reliance Communications, asking it to pay its pending dues by March 21. When the company failed to respond, instructions were issued to seal the towers. The move is expected to affect cellular services of Reliance customers in Thane.

The Thane Corporation is also exploring the legal grounds of filing a contempt petition against Reliance Communications chairman Anil Ambani for not paying the pending dues, despite the HC and the SC directing the company to do so.
