Commissioner visits lakes to review situation

The worsening water crisis prompted Municipal Commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya to visit the Bhatsa, Tansa and Modak Sagar lakes in Thane district on Wednesday to review the water supply situation.

He has asked the civic administration to take the steps to ensure enough supply until the next monsoon. Kshatriya also inspected pumping stations and the purification plant.

“Although there is a scarcity it’s not impossible to supply water till the monsoon if we plan properly and manage well,” said Kshatriya.

Hindustan Times had reported on Wednesday that water in the three lakes catering to the western suburbs and island city would last only for 200 days. The civic body was considering the option of imposing a 100 per cent water cut in each zone of the city once a week.

This means Mumbaiites will have to do without water supply for one day in a week.

There are 108 water supply zones in the city, which will be broadly divided into seven zones [two in city, two in western suburbs and three in eastern suburbs]. Each zone will have to face 100 per cent cut once a week.

Civic officials said they are planning to draw less water from the dams once the mercury dips so that they can save some for the summer.

The municipal body said there are 7.69 lakh million litres of water in all the six lakes together.

Last, year, this time, these lakes had 10.07 lakh million litres of water.

The corporation plans to approach the Supreme Court to seek permission to provide legal water connections to slums that have mushroomed in the city between 1995 and 2000. About 3.84 lakh shanties have come up during this period.

“Legalising water connections would decrease the theft of water,” said Anil Diggikar, Additional Municipal Commissioner.

125 MCD employees get termination notice

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has issued termination notices to 125 employees working in its Health department on grounds of seeking employment through forged documents. In addition, the MCD’s upper division clerk U C Sharma, who reportedly facilitated the appointments, has also been suspended.

The matter came to light with the intervention of Delhi Mayor Dr Kanwar Sain who looked into the issue and recommended the action.

According to the civic body, 225 employees had been appointed in the department in 2000 facilitated by Sharma. In 2006, an audit department investigation revealed that these appointments were illegal as they had been done on the basis of forged documents and with the approval of the then Municipal Commissioner they were handed out termination notices.

However, of the 225 employees, 125 employees then approached the Delhi High Court following which the civic body was asked to reinstate these employees on the ground that they had been denied a chance of a fair hearing.

As per the court directions, the MCD re-instated the employees and served them a show cause notice to produce the original documents, failing which the civic body has finally issued them a notice for termination of their service.

Ahmedabad civic body terminates 10-yr lease agreement

The much-hyped lease agreement between the Indian Cricket League (ICL) parent company, Essel Sports Private Ltd (ESPL), and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for the use of Sardar Patel Stadium has been terminated.

The termination of agreement came as ESPL defaulted on timely payment of quarterly rent.

ESPL made a payment of the first quarterly rent of Rs 3 lakh in February, nearly five months after the due date of September 1, 2008. The default continued till June, as a result of which by the time the fourth quarter became due, the amount piled up to Rs 9 lakh.

The AMC then slapped a show cause notice on ESPL on October 27 asking as to why the agreement should not be revoked in view of the default. The AMC was not satisfied with the explanation offered by ESPL saying that the default was “due to unavoidable circumstances”.

A cheque for Rs 3 lakh was attached with the explanation of October 23, with a promise that the remaining due of Rs 6 lakh will be paid by November 30. Former Indian team wicket keeper Kiran More, who has been connected with the ICL, said he was unaware of the development and that he had no idea of whether the contract was terminated.

The Leader of Opposition in the civic body, Surendra Baxi, has criticised the AMC for sleeping on the action and issuing showcause notice despite knowing about the default.
