Modi asks civic officials to speed up work

PATNA: Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction at the progress of work under the Mukhya Mantri Nagar Vikas Yojana while reviewing the work done by 11 municipal corporations and 43 nagar parishads.

He directed the executive officers of municipal corporations and municipalities to complete work in the urban areas under Mukhya Mantri Nagar Vikas Yojana to utilise the entire Rs 200 crore provided for the purpose.

Modi directed the civic officials to complete the construction of roads, creation of parks and improvement of river banks under the scheme in right earnest. He said all the district magistrates should review the work under the scheme every fortnight.

NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will soon start survey, registration, preparation of bio-metric, bio-cryptic photo identity cards, work relating to comprehensive three dimensional coverage and creation of data base of squatters and vendors engaged in tehbazari and squatting activities from December, 2009.

According to mayor Dr Kanwar Sain, there is a need to create database of all the hawkers and vendors in Delhi to regulate their activities and licensing system. It will also help in monitoring their activities from security angle which is a prime concern of police. The database so created will be shared with Delhi Police also.

The mayor said that MCD had framed a scheme way back in year 2007 to regulate the activity of squatting and vending under the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors-2004 on the directions of the Supreme Court. He informed that as per the directions of the Honble Supreme Court, MCD is undertaking the work to relocate the vendors to take care of problems like inadequate walking space for pedestrian and traffic congestion.

Dr Sain informed that the work has been entrusted to a Delhi-based company namely M/s INDIVELOP, which has been selected after competition through tendering procedure and stiff negotiations of rates in public interest.

14 shopkeepers fined during PMC drive

PATNA: Following the Patna High Court directive and subsequent order issued by urban development department principal secretary Afzal Amannulah, a joint team of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and district administration launched an anti-encroachment drive on Monday.

On the very first day of the drive, which was launched from near St Joseph's Convent on Ashok Rajpath, as many as 14 shopkeepers were fined for dumping goods on pavements and a fine of Rs 6,000 was realized from them.

Shops which had come on the footpaths were removed and 10 pushcarts too were seized during the drive.

Led by PMC executive engineer Brahmdeo Dubey, the joint team was accompanied by police force to tackle any untoward incident during the anti-encroachment drive.

The team would undertake the drive between the stretch of Kargil Chowk and Maurya Hotel on Tuesday, PMC new capital area executive officer Vinay S Verma, who was supervising the drive, told TOI.

He said the drive would be undertaken along the main roads -- Bailey Road, Exhibition Road, Fraser Road, Station Road, Boring Road, Boring Canal Road, part of Ashok Rajpath, Veer Chand Patel Road, Buddha Road and Museum Road -- in the coming days and by lanes along these main roads too would be freed from encroachment.
