BJP likely to replace incumbent Subhash Arya for the post

Names of Vijender Gupta and Ved Prakash Gupta is doing the rounds for the post

BJP councillors have filed their nominations for posts in 18 committees of the MCD

NEW DELHI: After the BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi got a new administration in place this year with Kanwar Sain replacing Arti Mehra as Delhi’s Mayor and Ram Kishan Singhal taking over as Standing Committee chairman from Vijender Gupta, the stage is now set for a new face to replace the incumbent Subhash Arya for the post of the Leader of the House in keeping with the trend.

According to sources, the names of former Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta and Ved Prakash Gupta, who has been the chairman of MCD Garden Committee, is doing the rounds for the post.

After BJP councillors were barred from filing nominations from the Delhi Assembly polls by the party high command, both Vijender Gupta and Arti Mehra had lobbied for tickets in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, with Mr. Vijender Gupta managing to secure a nomination from the Chandni Chowk parliamentary constituency.

However, he was defeated by senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal in the polls.

According to some BJP councillors, Mr. Vijender Gupta’s chances of getting the post are brighter, though given the fact that he got a ticket for the Lok Sabha polls might work against him. Ved Prakash Gupta on the other hand is said to be relying on strong support from some senior BJP leaders to see him through.

Meanwhile, councillors belonging to the BJP have filed their nominations for the posts of chairman and vice-chairman of 18 special and ad hoc committees of the MCD.

Saturday was the last date for filing the nominations and elections to these posts will be held on Monday and Tuesday at the meetings of their respective special and ad hoc committees at the MCD headquarters in Town Hall.

BPS files to be cleared daily

August 1st, 2009
By Our Correspondent

Hyderabad, July 31: The officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will clear BPS applications everyday.

With the election process being halted, most of the officials who were drafted for pre-poll work will be shifted to the BPS clearance cell. The GHMC has cleared 12,000 applications till date since the regularisation process began on June 23.

“Most of our officials and employees were busy with pre-poll process. We want to clear as many applications as possible from Monday. All applicants who have submitted structural stability certificates, paid the second and final instalment of penalisation charges and submitted all the required documents, can take the regularisation certificates,” said the GHMC chief city planner, Mr Purushothama Reddy.

Several property owners from surrounding 12 municipalities have complained that BPS clearance at their respective municipal offices is moving at snail’s pace.

“The officials are not able to trace the files despite the BPS registration number being given to them by us. Several applicants are being told to come after a day or two. We can’t keep running around the municipal offices. The officials should keep the files ready and then send notices to the applicants,” said Mr A. Ravinder Raju, the president of Shantinagar Colony Welfare Association at Kapra Municipality.

Over 2 lakh applications have been submitted under BPS, a majority of them pertaining to individual residential buildings and flats.

GHMC has also decided to convene a meeting with the owners of penthouses, flats and apartment welfare associations to decide on fire safety norms to be adopted

No space for Shiv Vada Pav stalls beyond civic zones

The Shiv Sena’s plans to promote a standardised Shiv Vada Pav across Mumbai have got a setback with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) failing to find space for vendors’ handcarts.

The civic administration has informed the ruling Sena that it can only accommodate vendors in municipal markets and allow sale in municipal building canteens. Officials told Sena leaders in a meeting on Tuesday that no space is possible near gardens, hospitals and schools. According to the Supreme Court order, it cannot even allow handcarts to roam on roads.

“The only option is municipal markets where we may release some space, and civic buildings where the Shiv Vada Pav can be sold in the canteen. No space is available on other municipal property and we cannot allow vendors on the roads as it is against the law,” said a civic official handling the scheme.
