Master plan for tourism development prepared

A Correspondent

KALPETTA: A comprehensive master plan aimed at the rapid development of different sectors in the district, including tourism, has been set and handed over to M.I. Shanavas, MP, by the Wayanad Tourism Organisation (WTO), an organisation of property owners in the district, recently.

The plan envisages different projects for the development of the district based on geographical, population ratio and social and cultural characteristics. It focussed on tapping the tourism potential of the district and utilising it as an alternative solution for the development of the agrarian sector.

The plan suggested the authorities to adopt anticipatory measures against the commercialising trend in the ecologically significant tourism destinations in the district. It proposes to implement a cable car project for Edakkal cave and set up an international-standard interpretation centre at Sulthan Bathery to provide ample information on the cultural importance of the district with the help of the modern digital technology.

The plan also suggests implementation of ‘Pookode for ever’ — a project to protect the eco-diversity and natural environment of Pookode Lake, one of the biggest natural freshwater lakes in the State. This project highlights the protection of indigenous fish habitats and the natural vegetation on the lakebed.

To tap the adventure tourism possibilities of the district, the plan proposes to set up an adventure sports academy at Mananthavadi. Apart from the construction of an airstrip for small aircraft, the plan also proposes to start paragliding facilities to attract adventure tourists.

K. Vancheeswaran, secretary of WTO; C.P. Shylesh, Joint secretary; and O.M. Rakesh, general convener, Splash 2009; handed over the master plan to Mr. Shanavas

Says Karnataka can reach the top slot in India with its help

BANGALORE: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Wednesday expressed optimism that Karnataka could emerge as number one in the country if the blueprint for development drawn up by the Vision 2020 Task Force was implemented.

“I believe that Karnataka, which is placed seventh in the country’s development map, can reach the top slot with the help of the blueprint,” Mr. Yeddyurappa said while addressing a meeting of the Vision Group 2020 here.

12 key areas

The Chief Minister said the Vision 2020 Task Force had dwelt upon 12 key areas, including Agriculture, Rural Development, Education, Health, Irrigation and Transport, to achieve all-round development of the State.

Pointing out that the Cabinet, at its meeting on May 22, 2009, had approved the Vision 2020 document, Mr. Yeddyurappa directed the Planning and Finance departments to initiate steps to include its contents in the next State Budget.

The Vision 2020 document has recommended steps for increasing income through agriculture, creating employment avenues for the working class through skill development and financial assistance, creating a knowledge society, improving the quality of healthcare for all sections of society, planned industrialisation and urbanisation and appropriate representation to women in economic, social and political areas.

The document also recommends steps to improve power availability to boost productivity, conserving the State’s environmental and natural resources, ensure Bangalore occupies the pre-eminent position in information technology, and achieving decentralisation through administrative reforms.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairman of State Planning Board D.H. Shankaramurthy and senior officials of the State government.

Tecom closes master-plan contract for SmartCity

State Govt urged to clear pending issues.

The company insisted on freehold land as the lease agreement had to be split for securing SEZ status for the project land.

Kochi, June 14 The hurdles in the progress of SmartCity Kochi appear to be far from over with Tecom, the promoters of the project, closing its contract with the UK-based Collin Buchnan company, who were appointed for preparing the master plan.

Mr Fareed Abdulrahman, the CEO of SmartCity Kochi, said in a press statement from Dubai: “In order to protect the best interests of SmartCity Kochi and its stakeholders, and further to all activities that were put on hold up until now, we regret to inform all those concerned that we have been forced to close out our contract with the internationally renowned UK-based Master Planning Consultants.

“Regardless of this, we would like to reiterate our commitment to the project and are sure that with the support of the Government of Kerala on the pending issues, SmartCity Kochi will be a success. Once the Government of Kerala takes action in resolving the pending issues and we mutually agree on the way forward, the master planners will recommence developing SmartCity Kochi.

Land lock

“Despite our best efforts to sort out issues by way of action, we have only heard statements in the media about more discussions on the subject of freehold. After our recent press meeting, it was said that SmartCity will come to know of the Government of Kerala’s decision by the first week of June,” the statement said.

The company had set a deadline of December for the State Government to sort out the issues. At a press meet on June 1 in Kochi, the CEO had said the project could not afford any further delay and the State Government should take immediate steps to resolve the issue regarding the 12 per cent freehold land before the end of this year. SmartCity Kochi is entitled to 12 per cent of freehold land and the company wanted a re-assurance from the State Government in this regard. As the project was a joint venture with the State Government, both the stakeholders will have to sit together and find a solution, Mr Abdulrahman said.

The company insisted on freehold land as the lease agreement had to be split for securing SEZ status for the project land. Of the 246 acres, 136 acres have already received SEZ status in principle.

The provision of freehold land has to be included in the lease agreement for the remaining 110 acres before it gets notified as SEZ, because land once notified as SEZ cannot be de-notified for including fresh provisions, the CEO said.

At the press meet, he also asked the State Government to make it clear about the requirements they needed to take the project forward. The CEO was of the view that the Government had not given any positive signs in this direction.
