Syed Sajjad Ali

The Tripura government will be preparing a master plan to provide drinking water to all localities of the State. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting to review the water and sanitation situation in remote habitations.

Officials said 134 localities, mostly tribal-dominated and remote, had no source of drinking water. The residents often face death and diseases due to consumption of contaminated water.

The review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Drinking and Water Sanitation (DWS) Minister Ratan Bhowmik and senior officials of different departments took stock of the water and sanitation situation in the State. The meeting decided to get ready a master plan to ensure supply of drinking water in hitherto unattended localities.

“The Chief Minister wanted the plan be ready by January 3, and initiate measures thereafter,” a DWS official said on Sunday. A committee with Chief Conservator of Forests Sanatan Talukder as chair has been constituted for the purpose.

The meeting extensively discussed possible measures to help out distressed people. Even shifting of some tribal hamlets to areas near permanent water sources was suggested. A decision was taken to involve the Forests and Tribal Welfare Department in a lead role with the assistance of relevant departments to solve the water crisis.

Residents often face death & diseases due to consumption of contaminated water.

Municipality Collects Rs 15 Lakh as Rent

Following a drive launched by Sambalpur Municipality on December 5, about `15 lakh has so far been collected as pending rent from shopkeepers who had taken the shops on lease from the municipality.

In order to prevent their shops from being sealed, the defaulters are making efforts to pay the amount to the Municipality.

‘’Since there was no response by the lesses after the Municipality issued several notices to them demanding payment of arrear rent, we were forced to launch a drive to seal their shops,’’ said Executive Officer of the Municipality Aniruddha Padhan.

The result of the drive was encouraging and the shopkeepers are now willing to pay their rents, he said.

According to reports, the Municipality owns about 688 shops in the town which it had leased out on rent from past several years. But in absence of any follow up to collect the rent by officials, a majority of the shopkeepers avoided paying the monthly rent.

The shopkeepers owe around `50 lakh to the Municipality though the actual rent per shop is miniscule. There was no hike in the rent amount over the years which should have been done, according to norms.

In the past few days, the Municipality sealed about 45 shops at Golebazar, Kamlibazar, Hospital road, VSS Marg, Sen Park area of the town and 10 shops at Kunjelpada Chowk on Friday.

As part of the efforts, HMDA has decided to establish the Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) and related facilities on the ORR. The HTMS project is being taken up with loan assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Phase-2 programme Operation and Maintenance of HTMS for five years. The last date for submitting the bids is March 11, 2014.

The HTMS, a part of intelligent transport system (ITS), is proposed to be developed for the ORR.

HTMS is composed of sub-systems that include establishing of emergency call box (328), 47 variable message signs on ORR with 19 interchanges with the main traffic control centre (TCC) at Nanakramguda interchange and a sub-traffic control centre at Ghatkesar interchange, meteorological data system (4), automatic traffic counter-cum-classifier (ATCC) and closed circuit television cameras (41), automatic vehicle counter cum classifier systems (74). The works also include the supply, laying, installation and commissioning of fibre optic cable along the main carriageway on both sides.
