SDMC gets city’s first upgraded ward clinic

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is all set to commission 40 clinics in its wards to provide treatment facilities for common diseases, preventive consultancy and common pathological tests.

New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi inaugurated the first such dispensary at Humayunpur village, which comes under the Safdarjung ward, on Sunday.

The dispensary was upgraded at a cost of Rs. 2 lakh.

SDMC Standing Committee chairman Shailender Singh Monti said the upgraded and renovated dispensary will provide health services to the residents of Humayunpur, Krishan Nagar, Arjun Nagar and Safdarjung Enclave.

Mr. Monti said the SDMC had identified around 70 underutilised premises that may also be transformed into such dispensaries.

MEERUT: At a time when viral fever, dengue and chikungunya cases are on a rise in the district and cleanliness in the city has becomes a major concern, Meerut Municipal Corporation (MMC) has started a drive to clean every parts of the city. Even the district hospital has signed a bond with a private company to provide them 14 sweepers for keeping the hospital clean.

R S Chauhan, municipal health officer, said, "We have started a cleanliness drive in the city to ensure that garbage is not strewn on the roads, thereby reducing the possibility of mosquitoes breeding in the open. Meanwhile, fogging machines are being used to kill the mosquitoes, which cause diseases like dengue and chikungunya. As many as 3,000 sanitary workers in the city have been instructed to be on their toes and ensure that the city remains clean at all costs. Leaves are being given to sanitation workers only in emergency cases."

Meanwhile, the district recorded 28 dengue cases, 52 chikungunya cases and hundreds of viral fever cases till Tuesday. While 11 health camps were set up in the city, 32 such camps were set up in rural areas on Tuesday to know the exact number of cases of fever. "On Tuesday alone, 2,045 patients visited the city camps, out of whom 412 were detected with fever and 271 blood samples were taken. Similarly, 4,431 patients visited the rural camps, out of whom 990 were detected with fever and 574 blood samples were taken," said chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Sharad Tyagi.

Also, to check the cleanliness situation in P L Sharma District Hospital, an agreement with a private firm has been done and 14 new sweepers were provided to the hospital. Giving details, Dr Sunil Gupta, chief medical superintendent of P L Sharma District Hospital, said, "An agreement of Rs 3.95 lakh per month has been done with a private firm, wherein not only have we been provided with 14 sanitary workers to clean the hospital premises but also with machines to clean the hospital floors thereby making the work faster."

The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to set up a special task force (comprising health and civic workers) to keep the city clean during the upcoming Dasara festivities. Mayor B.L. Bhyrappa told The Hindu here on Saturday that over 270 civic workers and health workers would be roped in to ensure cleanliness across the city, particularly in the core areas where Dasara programmes would be held.

The task force will also include a mobile team to address the issues immediately at the Dasara venues. However, sanitation and collection of garbage and its disposal would continue as usual in the rest of the city, the Mayor added. Mr. Bhyrappa said MCC is taking additional care to keep the city clean during Dasara. Mysuru was ranked the cleanest city in the country for the second consecutive year this year by the Union government.

Meanwhile, health workers would take all necessary steps, including fogging, to prevent any possible outbreak of vector-borne diseases.

Health workers would also discourage people, particularly tourists and traders from using plastic bags, the Mayor said.

Mr. Bhyrappa said that while one team would clean the route of the Dasara procession, the other would follow the procession cleaning the route. Road sweeping machines would also be used extensively in the city's core areas, including prominent roads such as D. Devaraj Urs Road, Sayyaji Rao Road and Albert Victor Road. Mr. Byrappa said that with the present storage in Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs, drinking water can be supplied to the entire city till the second week of December.

Kudumbasree to launch health-care centre for poor

The Kozhikode Corporation Kudumbasree will launch a healthcare centre for the poor.

The centre will be based on the old corporation office premises near the Kozhikode Beach where the Kudumbasree office is also located. The purpose of the centre is to provide medical support equipment such as wheel chairs, air beds, water beds, walking sticks, stretchers and commode chairs free of cost.

“The equipment we have collected are new. People can return them after use, especially the costly equipment such as aid bed,” said M.V. Ramsi Ismail, project coordinator (in-charge).

The beneficiaries of the centre will be patients from poor families whose annual income is below Rs.50,000. Those who need the services of the centre should approach it with a letter either by the ward councillor or the respective secretaries of Kudumbasree Area Development Societies.

The funds for the centre will be sourced from voluntary organisations. “Many organisations have volunteered to provide their utility funds to purchase equipment,” he said and added that their support was necessary to ensure public participation in the project.

Drug Bank

The Kudumbasree is also planning to revive its Drug Bank and attach it to the centre. “We are planning to focus on medicines for diseases such as cancer and renal failure. Other medicines will also be available,” he said.

There are also plans to revive the counselling centre which was launched a year ago. “Both Drug Bank and counselling centre will be fully operational in a month,” he added.

Corporation’s move to reward best cleanest ward receives setback

A move of the Task Force on Swachh Mangaluru headed by Mayor Harinath to reward the best cleanest ward in the city with monetary benefit received a setback at a meeting of the Mangaluru City Corporation council on Tuesday with some members opposing it.

The Mayor announced that the first best cleanest ward would be given Rs. 25 lakh for development works. The second one would get Rs. 15 lakh.

But some members said that wards in the central business district area in the city with concrete roads looked neat and clean. They could not be compared to the wards on the outskirts which did not have concrete roads.

The Mayor said that condition of roads had nothing to do with the selection. The reward would be based on maintaining cleanliness.

Not satisfied with this, the members wanted to know the basis on which the selection would be made. The Mayor said that he would call a meeting to this effect within a fortnight to discuss the subject in detail and take a final decision.
