MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has identified 22 roads in the city for widening, according to N. Yogish Bhat, MLA.

A survey was being conducted in this regard, he said after inaugurating the annual meeting of the Central Market Merchants’ Association here on Sunday.

The roads identified for widening included Bhawanthi Street, Car Street, Mannagudda-Bunder Road, and Mahamai Temple-Dongarakery Canara High School Road, Mr. Bhat said.

The Government, through the city corporation, would concrete some major roads here at an estimated cost of Rs. 125 crore. Concreting of some roads had been completed, some were under way while the work on a few others would begin after the projects at hand were completed, he said.

Mr. Bhat, who is also chairman of the Karnataka State Industrial Investment and Development Corporation Ltd. (KSIIDCL), said that the Government was examining a proposal to lay a 38-km-long ring road in the city. The KSIIDCL would soon conduct a survey in this regard. In addition, the Government had planned to construct a marine aquarium park at Tannirbavi and a rope-bridge across the Gurpur between Tannirbavi and Sulthan Bathery to attract tourists, he said.

Mr. Bhat said that a team of officials, comprising the Director of the Department of Tourism and the Managing Director of KSIIDCL, would visit the city on Monday and conduct spot inspection for taking up the three projects. Personnel from the Coastal Karnataka Development Authority would also join the team, he added.

Ring road

According to the plan, the proposed 100-ft-wide ring road will branch out on either side of the Nethravathi bridge at Ullal and meet at Gurupur bridge at Kulur on the National Highway 17. It would connect NH 17, NH 48 and NH 13. The KSIIDCL would conduct a survey in this regard. This project would have to be taken up under public-private- partnership (PPP) model. The ring road would help reduce traffic congestion in the city, he said.

The MLA said that construction of marine aquarium park would require Rs. 250 crore. This project also would have to be taken up under PPP model.

Mr. Bhat said that there was a need to construct a super speciality hospital here under PPP model to help the poor. Patients could be offered services at 50 per cent of the treatment cost. Construction of the hospital would require Rs. 200 crore, he said.

J.I. Kittur, Joint Director, Department of Prosecution, and Law Officer in the Office of Director General and Inspector General of Police, Bangalore, was felicitated on the occasion as he had served as public prosecutor in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts till recently.

President of the association K. Shashidharan and general secretary Hameed Kandak were present.

Work to be taken up under Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Towns Development Programme

Suggestion made to improve the stretch between Station Circle and Gunj Circle

Raichur: The Raichur City Municipal Council, at a special general body meeting held here on Tuesday, decided to set aside Rs. 10 crore from the funds sanctioned under the Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Towns Development Programme for widening and developing important roads in the city.

The issue of widening and improving of the roads in the city came up for discussion when Ramachandrappa, City Municipal Commissioner, told the meeting that the Government had recently sanctioned Rs. 30 crore under the Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Towns Development Programme to take up road and drainage improvement, slum development and improvement of infrastructure in the city.

Mr. Ramachandrappa said that the fund sanctioned under the programme should be utilised within two years after its release mainly for the development of basic amenities like roads and drains. Fifty per cent of the total funds released should be reserved for widening and improvement of roads and drainages, 20 per cent for improvement of facilities in the slum localities and 30 per cent for improvement of basic facilities in the city.

The notified developmental works should be implemented immediately after the release of funds and should be completed within two years, he added.

Mr. Ramachandrappa informed the meeting that after getting approval from the council, an action plan would be prepared in accordance with the norms prescribed under the programme and will be submitted to the district administration for scrutiny.

Then, the Deputy Commissioner would forward it to the Government seeking its final approval.

The Opposition Congress member Jayanna suggested that the development work should be taken up on the stretch between Station Circle and Gunj Circle via Basaveshwara Circle. Approving the proposal moved by Mr. Jayanna, Mr. Mareppa said that he would ask the officials at the planning branch in the city municipality to prepare an action plan after inspecting the said stretch of the road. The finalised action plan would be submitted to the district administration for scrutiny and further approval from the Government.

The meeting also discussed the steps to be taken to create awareness among the public to prevent spread of A(H1N1) in the city. Mr. Jayanna raised the issue when he asked what measures the city municipality had initiated in containing the spread of A(H1N1).

KURNOOL: The Round Table of seven parties opposed the crucial decisions of the Municipal Council which proposed to demolish the Municipal Open theatre, distribute house sites among corporators and deviate from the master plan in developing roads. Somisetty Venkateswarlu (TDP), Prabhakar Reddy and T. Shadrak (CPI-M), S.N. Rasool (CPI), Seshaphani (Mana Party), Karunakar (BSP), Naganna (SUCI), Sivasankar Reddy (PRP) and E. Pulla Reddy, floor leader in the council attended the round table conference here on Sunday, which planned to spearhead the movement against the “unpopular decisions” of the council.

CPI (M) district secretary T. Shadrak said the ruling party members, Mayor and corporators planned to demolish the Open air theatre with ulterior motive of widening the road to the house of a Congress leader and allot new shops to binami holders. The people of weaker sections were hurt by decision for demolition of the theatre which was named after Babu Jagjivanram.

If the corporation was interested in construction of commercial complexes, many open sites were available in the city and the Open air theatre could be spared. Also, the round table opposed the move to give away house sites to corporators at Johrapuram on the ground that it was not fair to give prime land to the elected members while thousands of poor families were waiting for house sites. Mr. Shadrak said the elected representatives should compete with each other in improving the assets of the corporation and not for distribution among themselves.

The participants expressed concern over deviation from the master plan by reducing the width of roads from 80 and 60 feet to 35 or 40 ft. If the roads were reduced, the corporation would be reduced to a gram panchayat, they contended.

Guntur Municipal Corporation to take up road widening

Massive greening project on the anvil

GUNTUR: Guntur Municipal Corporation will take up clearing up of all encroachments by road side very soon to take up a project of constructing footpaths with the financial assistance of Vijayawada Guntur Mangalagiri Tenali Urban Development Authority with a Rs.5 crore layout.

This project will help the Corporation provide better carriageway for vehicles and a space for pedestrians to walk on main roads or bylanes in the city, said Municipal Commissioner K. Illambarthi. Talking to The Hindu, he hoped to launch the project some time in August and similarly on agenda was widening at least three major roads in Guntur. Butchaiahthota first lane, which was pending for widening would be taken up within 10 days, with the Indian Railways providing some land for accomplishing this task. The Railways had constructed a new wall within its land proposes to take away debris of the old wall to pave way for the GMC contractors to lay a widened road. This would provide a better connectivity to Vijayawada approach road from the city. Two other roads to be widened immediately are Srinivasa Kalyana Mandapam Road from Bus stand and JKC College Road to 80 feet.

The JKC College road widening works would be taken up with 75 per cent finance from the VGTMUDA as it connects the proposed Outer Ring Road of the Urban Development Authority to lead to Autonagar. In the next five days the GMC proposes to take up a massive city greening project by involving the stake holders, creating user communities, seedlings supplied by the AP Social Forestry Corporation. About 1.15 lakh saplings would be planted in all amenable/conducive areas and the Social Forestry people in association with user communities would look after the protection and growth of saplings for three years.

Drinking water

All possible efforts were being made to bring Guntur under the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and it could be reality very soon with Warangal also likely to get the nod for implementing the projects under this scheme. Meanwhile, over Rs.600 crore would flow into Guntur Municipal corporation under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT) by October for drinking water and underground drainage schemes to be implemented with the help of World Bank.

The NHAI had begun the land acquisition process for laying the second water pipeline from Guntur Channel to Thakellapadu, the Commissioner added.

Rs 109 cr proposal to develop BRTS road cleared

PUNE: The standing committee of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Tuesday approved the Rs 107.91 crore proposal to develop the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) road from Nashik Phata to Wakad.

The total length of the road will be 7.9 km and will be 45 metres wide. The PCMC is in possession of 90 per cent of the land required to widen the road, said junior engineer Ashok Kute. The project will be completed in 18 months.

Standing committee chairman Dnyaneshwar Bhalerao said that the committee had also approved a proposal to give cash prizes to meritorious Std X and Std XII students of private schools. The top 25 students from both classes will be felicitated and receive a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each. Private schools within the municipal limits will be directed to give a list of their toppers in the Std X and XII examinations.

Deepak Gaikwad, an employee of the octroi department will also be felicitated in the civic general body meeting and given two increments for his bravery in foiling an armed robbery attempt at a octroi post in Talawade in June 2009.
