EMC plans expansion of arterial roads

Special Correspondent

The Eluru Municipal Corporation (EMC) has proposed to take up expansion of eight arterial roads within the city limits. A detailed survey on the road expansion works in different parts of the city will be taken up shortly, according to Municipal Commissioner G. Nagaraju.

The roads connecting the three main roads leading to Kaikaluru, Jangareddygudem, and Chintalapudi from the city have been proposed for expansion.

Poor connectivity of the narrow and congested arterial roads with the main roads was found to be the main reason for frequent traffic bottlenecks in the city, the Commissioner said. The width of the roads was proposed to be maintained at 40-60ft.

The Commissioner said the EMC authorities would take measures for expansion of the road linking the GNT road from the Powerpet railway station through a level crossing with a width of 60ft. Complaints were galore from the students and the other sections of people over the traffic problem in the city, forcing the authorities to go for expansion of the roads, he added.

A detailed survey will be taken up in the city shortly, says EMC Commissioner.

PCMC may build new road in Pimple Saudagar

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) administration may construct an alternative road in Pimple Saudagar to link the area to Sangvi-Kiwale bus rapid transit (BRT) route.

The existing two-km road from Planet Millenium to Rakshak chowk passes through defence areas. It is often blocked by defence personnel causing inconvenience to over 10,000 local residents.

The road is the easiest route for residents of Pimple Saudagar to reach Aundh, Baner and other areas. If closed, residents have to take a longer route to access Sangvi-Kiwale road to reach these areas. About a year ago, when the road was closed, the civic officials had to seek the intervention of the divisional commissioner to solve the impasse.

Therefore, the civic administration has planned to construct an alternative road at the stretch as well as to widen the old road, from the municipal school till Rakshak chowk, to 20 metres. The civic body has tabled a proposal before the general body.

A civic official said the alternative road will be 18-metre wide and will pass from survey no 59 to 121, adjacent to the defence land. The PCMC has possession of more than 70% of the land needed for the project. The estimated cost is Rs 8.70 crore, whereas the civic body needs Rs 1.50 crore to widen the old road.

Shirish Poreddy, spokesperson for the engineering department, said, "The department will prepare a detailed project report after approval from the GB for both projects. Bids from private contractors will be invited."

The project report will indicate how much land is needed form private land owners and the defence authorities. "Both roads will have four lanes and footpaths," he added.

Local NCP corporator Nana Kate said, "Earlier, there was a road from Pimple Saudgar till the post office located ahead of Rakshak Chowk along Sangvi-Kiwale road. But, the defence authorities closed the road 25 years ago, after which the existing road was built. This road also passes through the defence land."

Kate said the development plan 14 years ago had proposed a road from Planet Millenium to Ginger society, further to Shivar chowk and ending at Jagtap Dairy on the Sangvi Kiwale road. But farmers had opposed land acquisition and the road could not be developed.

"These farmers had later sold their land to some builders, who are now willing to give it for the proposed road. However, this road cannot be a good alternative to the existing Panet Millenium-Rakshak chowk road as people will have to travel a longer distance," Kate added.

Anita Shinde, a local resident said, "The road from Planet Millenium to Rakshak chowk is too narrow and must be widened so that the vehicles can travel faster."

Rohit Mane, a local resident said, "The civic body has acquired land from the defence authorities for widening the Pune-Mumbai highway. Similarly it should acquire the land for widening this road that passes through defence land. The defence authorities should give the requisite land for road widening in public interest."

CM sanctions 18 crore for repair of city roads

LUCKNOW: Ignorance of the government and callous attitude of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation has left roads of some localities in dire need of makeover. Residents have to struggle daily to commute on roads full of deep furrows and boulders. Lack of maintenance has led to deep erosion of upper layers of roads making them dangerous for riders, and in some cases, even fatal.

A senior resident of Rajajipuram sector-B fell off a bike and died instantly after hitting a boulder. Residents of the colony say the road has been ignored for the last 10 years even after repeated complaints. Anurag Bajpayee, a resident, said, "The road is dangerous as it breaks the suspension of cars if driving in speed. The locals are habitual but outsiders face a major risk." Locals complained, school children fell off rickshaws because of bad roads. Sudhir Tripathi, general secretary of an NGO working in this area, said, "A rickshaw turned upside down on this road injuring three women. When we complained, LMC said it had no funds for repair."

In other areas like Shankarpurwa ward-II of Vikasnagar, a road next to a government school is completely damaged and has huge pits. Even roadside vendors complain, "Bikes skid here because of large stones."

The Jal Nigam road near Cattle Colony, Balaganj which has often been pitted is accident-prone because of long pending repair work. Roads of other localities like Aliganj, Indiranagar, Mahanagar, Khurramnagar and Gomtinagar are also in want of repair urgently.

LMC repairs roads with money from 'Samagra Vikas Yojna', but has not received funds this year and wrote to the urban development department to provide money on priority basis. Municipal commissioner R K Singh said CM Akhilesh Yadav has allocated Rs 18 crore for uplift of certain roads in Lucknow under the new Nagariya Sadak Sudhar Yojna launched by ministry of urban development, GoUP from this year onwards to fund construction of roads across UP. Roads in worst condition would be taken up for repair first.

Officials claim they are likely to begin groundwork by mid-December.
