NALGONDA: A delegation comprising the engineers of various municipal bodies, Pollution Control Board and other agencies from different States visited Nalgonda municipality on Wednesday as part of a training programme on Municipal Solid Waste Management.

The study tour was organised as an integral part of the ongoing five-day training programme being organised by the Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) for the engineers. The engineers from Karnataka, Jammu & Kashmi, Maharastra, West Bengal, Chattisgarh, and other States visited various wards in the town and later the vermicompost unit at Panagal.

Interaction

The delegates interacted with the residents at the seventh ward and inquired about the household waste disposal system. During their visit to the compost unit, the municipal officials concerned explained about the method of house to house collection, transportation, segregation and processing of the waste into compost being followed in the municipality.

Municipal sanitary inspector B. Janardhan Reddy said that the compost unit was set up last year to convert the waste into vermicompost. About 3,000 kgs of vermicompost is being produced at the unit per month, he said and added that the vermicompost is being supplied to the farmers for using the same as organic manure in cultivation.

Some of the members of the team suggested that two bins should be supplied to each household for collection of organic and non-organic waste separately as a means of source segregation.

ESCI Assistant Professor and Course Director G. Venkatesham told The Hindu that the training programme aims to familiarise the participants on the scientific management of municipal solid waste to protect public health and environment.

“Effective management of municipal solid waste is the major challenge being faced by all the municipalities in the country and it holds the key to prevent environmental pollution”, he said.

Waste disposal: UDF seeks solution

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The United Democratic Front has warned that it will intensify its agitation if the government does not intervene immediately to solve the problem of garbage dumping in Thiruvalla town.

In a statement issued here on Monday, Congress block committee president T.K. Sajeev alleged that local MLA and former Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas was maintaining a studied silence towards the grave health risk posed by the dumping of waste in the municipal stadium. Mr. Sajeev said a march would be taken out to the MLA’s residence, if he failed to redress the public grievance. The Kerala Youth Front (M) leaders, V.R.Rajesh and Reji Kuruvila, too accused the LDF of maintaining a dual policy towards waste disposal in the municipal limits. They alleged that LDF was not co-operating with the civic body’s efforts to find a suitable site for setting up a solid waste treatment plant in the municipal limits.

The KYF(M) leaders alleged the local MLA had failed to intervene in such a major issue. Instead of staging protests, the LDF should co-operate with the civic body to resolve the crisis for ever, they added.

APTDC decides to end its operations at Brahmapuram

Corporation staff will operate the plant till an agency is selected for running it.

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation has taken over the functioning of its solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram. This follows the decision of the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation (APTDC), which installed the plant, to end its operation there after setting up the plant and running it for one year.

Corporation staff will operate the plant till an agency is selected for running it. The corporation had shortlisted a few agencies for operating it, said Mayor Mercy Williams.

The APTDC has handed over the documents regarding the machinery and other accessories installed at the site.

The final settlement of bills will be made only after the FACT Engineering and Design Organisation, the consultant of the corporation, makes the recommendation in that regard, Ms. Williams said.

Meanwhile, 15 workers who were earlier engaged by the APTDC for operating the plant had expressed their willingness to work in the plant on behalf of the corporation. The corporation will seek the permission of the State government and the Corporation Council for engaging these workers, Ms. Williams said.
