LEDs to light up Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road soon

Picture for representational purpose only.

Hyderabad: For the first time in the country, LEDs are to be installed along an eight-lane expressway. Following a green signal from the state government, the 24-km stretch of the Outer Ring Road, from Gachibowli to Shamshabad, will be lit up with light emitting diodes in the coming months.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority is to take up the project with a Rs 30 crore loan assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Generally, sodium or mercury vapour lights are used along highways; but the HMDA has opted for LEDs in order to save power and because they do not need frequent replacements.

To light up the ORR, the HMDA needs each light outputting 120-125 watts of illumination. The LEDs can produce the light while consuming lesser power than other categories of bulbs.

Each pole will have two arms with lights on the sides to illuminate the eight carriageways. Power saving is one of the reasons for taking the LED route, but installing solar panels is not yet an option.

Nashik Municipal Corporation to construct 5 water tanks in time for Kumbh

NASHIK: The standing committee of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Friday approved the construction of five water tanks in the city, at a cost of Rs 11.63 crore in view of the 2015 Kumbh Mela.

Of the five tanks, two are to be constructed in the Panchavati division - at prabhag no. 15 and prabhag no. 11 - while one each will be constructed in the Nashik West, Cido and Satpur divisions of the civic body.

The NMC has finalized the tender process and the contractors for the proposed water tanks. "Proposals of the civic body to award the contracts for the construction of the water tanks have been approved," said NMC standing committee chairman Ramesh Dhongade.

U M Dharmadhikari, executive engineer (distribution), water supply department of the NMC, said, "The population of the city is increasing, with more and more high-rises coming up. The water tanks have been planned considering the water requirement in several Nashik areas."

However, Nashik citizens feel that just water tanks alone will not offer a solution and many said that there was a need for proper management of the water supply in the city. "We have adequate water tanks in the Cidco area, but there is only a single pipeline through for the supply. The same pipeline is used to supply water to the Satpur division," said a Cidco resident.

New Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation HQ to be opened on Feb 18

NAVI MUMBAI: Sources at the civic body said the new Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) headquarters will be thrown open on February 18.

The much-delayed project had come under criticism due to its astounding Rs 155 crore cost and the civic body sanctioning in indiscriminately hacking trees to 'improve visibility'.

The date of the inauguration was also in doubt, as the civic body leaders wanted NCP supremo Sharad Pawar to do the honours. Corporators had held up a general assembly session with the demand the names of every single member of the council be engraved on a plaque outside the structure.

Deputy municipal commissioner J Sinnarkar affirmed the dates had been decided. "The new headquarters should be inaugurated on February 18. The final touch ups to the structure are underway,"

Mysore City Corporation gives nod to build four more swimming pools

MYSORE: If Mysore City Corporation has its way, the city will get four more swimming pools.

The civic body on Friday approved a proposal to construct four swimming pools in different parts of the city. While the proposal to build pools in Narasimharaja Mohalla, Vijayanagar and Devaraja Mohalla was passed without much discussion, the one proposed at Puttaraj Gawai stadium in JP Nagar on build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis triggered opposition.

The ruling JD(S)-BJP combine cut a sorry figure when mayor N M Rajeshwari said that she was not informed about the subject being included in the agenda for the monthly meeting of the council. Grabbing the opportunity, the opposition Congress questioned the motive and accused the ruling parties of hurrying it through. However, B L Bhyrappa, who represents JP Nagar, said that that the work, estimated to cost Rs 90 lakh, is proposed to be financed by private entity, given that the MCC lacks funds.

The members sought to know if private entities would adhere to MCC's directives. They also questioned as to why MCC didn't invite interest of expression for the project. After clarification from the ruling combine, the council approved it. Rajeshwari said that she will write to the government seeking funds for the project. In case they don't come through, the project can be taken up on BOOT basis, she ruled.

During the meeting, the members complained that a prime site on upscale Kalidasa Road, allotted by the MCC to promote khadi, is being misused. They asked the MCC to withdraw the approval and get back the 20x10 sqft plot. The members said that the officials should focus on protecting public properties. They asked the officials to upgrade the records, arguing that anti-social elements are trying to grab prime properties.

The meeting also discussed the projects to be taken up with Rs 100 crore special grants from CM Siddaramaiah, which were allocated in the budget. The MCC has not finalized the projects, the members said, charging the officials with being lax.

Vadodara to finally get its new railway flyovers

Vadodara is all set to get the two long-awaited crucial railway over-bridges that would bring the expanding city closer. The Kalali ROB and the Dandia Bazar-Akota flyovers are nearing their completion in the near future. While VMC officials say that the Kalali ROB will be ready for inauguration within a week, the Akota bridge is expected to be ready by mid-February.

Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-administered VMC has requested Chief Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the ROBs, along with a list of other corporation projects. After four years of wait, Vadodara will finally get its ROB, connecting Kalali, Makarpura and Old Padra Road and reducing the commuting time to areas where the city is now expanding. Although Chief Minister Narendra Modi has promised to arrive in the city for the formal inauguration, VMC says that the ROB will be thrown open for public use the moment it is ready.

Standing Committee Chairman of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation Dr Hitendra Patel said, “The lighting work is pending on the Kalali ROB, which will be completed within a matter of days. We will open the ROB for the public shortly, as the CM is busy right now and we cannot keep the ROB shut and inconvenience the people. We will have a formal inauguration later.”

The VMC has also planned the inauguration of the Manjalpur sports stadium, the newly-constructed bus depot as well as a hospital in Gotri, at the hands of Modi at one go. Patel said, “The total cost of the four projects is Rs 120 crores. They are remarkable projects and the CM is expected to give us a date within 15 days. The Akota-Dandia Bazar ROB, however, will take another two months to be completed as the Railways is handling the portion that has to be constructed over the rail lines because it involves shifting of some high tension wires.” The VMC has also begun beautification of the circles that will stand at the ends of the Kalali flyover.
