NEW DELHI, 15 MAY: South Corporation standing committee today passed the proposal for preparing the layout plan of 187 unauthorised regularised colonies which fall under its jurisdiction.

After some councillors led by leader of the House Subhash Arya put forth a proposal, it was decided that preparation of layout plans of around 50 colonies will be started at the earliest. The standing committee also passed a resolution that no other agency but South Corporation can invest in recently  unauthorised regularised (UR) colonies.

Even the fund of MLA and MP can be used through corporation. 'These colonies are now UR colonies and as per the rule of corporation, passed by Parliament, only corporation and invest for development activities in these colonies. The money intended to be invested by MLAs and MPs will also go through concerned corporation," said Mr Arya. According to Mr Arya, “Twenty five per cent colonies from each zone will be chosen in the first phase for making the layout plan."

Multi-level parking lot mulled in Film City complex

NOIDA: Faced with an acute parking shortage in Noida, especially in the Film City complex in Sector 16A, Noida Authority is mulling setting up of a multi-level parking lot in the area. Noida's chairman and CEO, Rama Raman, has directed officials to study the feasibility and viability of the project.

Officials in charge of the area have to conduct a detailed survey of a plot which has been earmarked for the project that will cater to nearby offices. "There are hundreds of vehicles that come to this area and a multi-level parking facility will address the current problem of a large number of vehicles being stationed on the roads, leading to traffic congestion," said a senior Authority official.

Currently, randomly parked vehicles in the area's narrow roads not only bring traffic to a halt, but are also a security hazard. "The study of the plot, which is in the vicinity of a power substation, will decide how many vehicles will be able to park at the facility. The number of floors will also be determined after that," he added.

"There is a dire need to check illegal parking. Moreover, the number of vehicles being added to the roads is sharply disproportionate to the land availability for parking. It is imperative to come up with alternatives like multi-level parking," the official said.

Desalination plant to come up at Tuticorin

CHENNAI: A desalination plant that will convert warm water discharged by a thermal plant into fresh water is coming up at Tuticorin, scientists at the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) have said.

A demonstration plant has been set up at north Chennai thermal power station, NIOT director M A Atmanand said during national technology day celebrations at NIOT on Saturday. The warm water discharged from the thermal plant would be converted to freshwater that can be used again by the plant.

NIOT is also eyeing more research activities at its upcoming campus in Andhra Pradesh. "The campus near Nellore is almost complete," said Atmanand. The campus will carry out more experiments due to its proximity to the sea.

The defence research and development organization (DRDO) will work in tandem with NIOT to explore underwater research opportunities, said Avinash Chander, director of advance systems laboratory (ASL) of DRDO.

BMC plans separate cycling track on Marine Drive promenade

BMC is planning a dedicated cycling track on Marine Drive promenade.

The civic administration is conducting a feasibility study and also identifying, in consultation with the traffic department, other areas in the city to construct similar cycling tracks.

"The path will be of use to cyclists, especially in the mornings on Saturdays and Sundays," said Vivek Phansalkar, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

While long-term plan is to keep the tracks open for users throughout the day, cyclists will be initially able to use them from 5 am to 7 am.

"The detailed plan, including parking area, length of the track and whether it should be on the seaside or road side, is being deliberated upon," said a civic official.

"The track will be constructed in such a way there is no hurdle for pedestrians, especially morning walkers. The proposal is expected to be finalised within two months," he said.

Cycling enthusiasts welcomed the move.

"A separate track will be a boon for enthusiasts as it will not only encourage cycling, a good exercise, but also ensure safety," said Anandini Thakoor, chairperson of Khar Residents Association.

Meanwhile, a proposal mooted by residents more than four years ago to create dedicated cycling tracks in Khar-Bandra lies in cold storage awaiting traffic department permissions.

Inspired by Scandinavian countries, members of Khar-Bandra-Santacruz (KBS) forum had mooted the proposal in 2009. It had suggested creating cycling tracks over a 30-km stretch covering Carter Road, Khar Road, Chimbai, Bandstand, Reclamation and Santacruz.

"The proposal is yet to be cleared by the traffic department. Some narrow lanes would not be ideal for such tracks but the Carter Road and Bandstand promenades could definitely be used by cyclists," said Thakoor.

KBS forum had roped in Open Bicycles Project, a Mumbai-based group, for a traffic analysis in Bandra.
