Directive to GVMC on water supply to VSP

At a high-level meeting in Hyderabad on Thursday on water supply for Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao asked GVMC to maintain a supply of 32 to 33 MGD, the quantum being given during the past two to three days, daily. Sources said RINL wanted that the Yeleru canal be de-silted so as to improve supply, as otherwise the plant would face a critical situation.

RINL CMD P. Madhusudhan, district Collector N. Yuvaraj, Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana, and APIIC officials participated in the meeting.

Sources said the GVMC was assessing the situation as supplying even 30 MGD would result in a shortfall of 5 MGD to 6 MGD for domestic supply.

Nagal Nagar residents’ plea for drinking water

Hundreds of residents from Nagal Nagar laid siege to the house of Deputy Mayor P.C. Tulsi Ram here on Sunday.

The residents complained that a borewell, sunk 10 days ago, was not closed. It posed a grave threat to pedestrians, particularly children. The civic body neither took efforts to close it nor lay a pipe and install a motor to pump water from the borewell.

The municipal corporation should properly seal the well to ensure safety of children and expedite erection of the motor pump, they said.

The residents said water was not supplied in their area for the past 20 days. The Deputy Mayor pacified them. He told them that borewells were being sunk in other places and the work had been taken up in phases. Once those works were completed, the borewell in their area would be commissioned. Mr. Tulsi Ram assured them that steps would be taken to resume drinking water supply in their area.

Acute water scarcity in Dindigul is forcing people to take to the streets. Many ward councillors avoid meeting people as they are unable to find solutions to their grievances.

The Corporation is struggling to supply water once in 12 or 15 days. Since rains failed in the past two years, groundwater level has gone down to 800-1,000 feet in many parts of the town.

The residents depend solely on Corporation water.

City to host national meet on safe drinking water

Special Correspondent

A national conference on safe drinking water, ‘Safe Water Kerala 2014’, will be organised here on February 25 by Kerala Water Authority, on behalf of the Water Resources Department of Kerala government.

The programme is being held in association with the Union Ministry of Drinking Water Supply and will coincide with the National Rural Water Awareness Week celebrations being observed from February 25 to March 1. The conference will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, Minister for Water Resources, P.J. Joseph, said the focus of the conference will be on source sustainability and water quality aimed at ensuring access to safe water to households.

Though the State is blessed with rich water resources, it is facing challenges in maintaining desired water levels and protecting the sources from contamination and salt water intrusion, especially during the summer.

The minister said the State has 1,247 drinking water projects under the KWA. Construction activities for 308 projects are in progress. KWA has provided 14.5 lakh water connections in the State, apart from 2.04 lakh public water taps.

Pointing out that many of the drinking projects were started in the 1970-80 period, Mr.Joseph said there was a need to upgrade the purification technology among them.
