Desilting works to end by month end, say officials

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation ( GHMC) commissioner MT Krishna Babu has directed the engineering officials to complete desilting works of nalas by the end of this month. He asked the officials to complete works by engaging more labourers as only 65% of the desilting work has been completed so far.

The commissioner along with mayor Mohd Majid Hussain inspected the ongoing desilting works in Balkapur nala from Banjara function hall to stretch up to Ahmednagar, Road No 1 of Banjara Hills, Pension payment office, Murad Nagar, Khaja Nagar and Bhola Nagar on Thursday.

The mayor and commissioner observed that many encroachments have come up on the nala beds at Bada Bazaar Bridge and Osman PT Bridge and directed the deputy municipal commissioner of cirlce no.7 to remove all the unauthorized encroachments with the help of the town planning wing immediately.

They asked the chief engineer to construct the retaining walls along the nalas wherever necessary to prevent dumping in drains by the locals.

Mayor directed the commissioner to modernise the central emergency squad with sufficient machinery and labour so that the emergency squad can tackle the emergent situations without any inconvenience. The commissioner informed that 150 stagnation points have been identified and sanctions have already been accorded and the works are in progress likely to be completed by June end.

Drainage cleaning work begins in Nadakkavu

KOZHIKODE: The residents of Kattuvayal Colony in Nadakkavu finally breathed a sigh of relief with Kozhikode Corporation starting the work to clear the 400m waste-clogged drainage passing through the colony.

The civic body started the clearing after the ombudsman for local self government bodies gave the directions to do so on May 15. This was after K S Jayasree, general secretary of Sthreechetana filed a petition before the ombudsman on the plight of the residents of the colony.

Jayasree filed the petition on May 17, 2012. There are about 57 families residing in the colony. Some 54 families received domestic water connection following the intervention of the ombudsman.

The civic body is carrying out the work under special fund. The ombudsman had asked to carry out the work using 300 labourers. The drainage passing through the colony had not been cleared for the past many years. All the waste including the septic tank waste flows into the drainage. The drain overflows during monsoon resulting in water logging in the area.

Corporation secretary B K Balaraj said that the civic body started the work on May 17. "The drainage will be cleared that will avoid water logging in monsoon. The civic body has allotted around Rs 72,000 for the work following the direction of ombudsman,'' said the secretary. "The work will be completed at the earliest,'' he said.

Jayasree said the local residents here used to lead a miserable life due to the issue. "The well water is polluted and around 300 people are depended on four public taps. Kerala Water Authority used to supply water on irregular days. The removal of waste from the clogged drainage would help to avoid overflow of filth and waste water during the monsoon,'' she added.

Tardy progress of desilting work

Special Correspondent

It is official now. Both Mayor Mohd. Majid Hussain and GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu have accepted that the ongoing storm water drains desilting work was slow with just 65 per cent of work completed. However, they assured to take steps to engage more men and machinery to expedite the work.

The two on Thursday inspected desilting works in several storm water drains like Balkapur nala from Banjara function hall to the stretch up to Ahmed Nagar, Road No. 1, pension payment office, Murad Nagar, Gudimalkapur, Khaja Nagar and Bhola Nagar.

They also noticed several unauthorised constructions en route and directed the town planning wing to remove them. BJP floor leader B. Prakash complained about left over silt garbage, debris etc at different places. He also requested shifting the fruit vendors at Gudimalkapur market as the waste material was being thrown into the nala.

Mr. Krishna Babu said retaining walls would be constructed wherever necessary to curb the menace of regular dumping. He also said that 150 stagnation points were identified.

Muttathara unit to process 40 million litres a day.

Electrical works for the Muttathara sewage treatment plant have been completed and the unit would be commissioned on June 30, said sources associated with the funding agency, Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP). The pre-commissioning activities will begin by the second week of June. Officials hope that the plant would start functioning from July 15 after one-month trial phase.

The KSUDP empowerment committee meeting was held on Wednesday. It was decided to re-tender the works associated with the branches for the expansion of the sewerage network. This, they said, would not impact the completion of construction activities at the plant and that by mid-July, the modern plant would begin processing 40 million litres a day, which is being collected from the city at present. This existing network would include only 35 per cent of the area within the Corporation limits.

The plant, which is Centrally-funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), will have capacity of 107 MLD. To reach this figure, the network would have to be laid out to all peripheral wards. The entire network cannot be taken up during the year, but may take up to five years. Hence, this would figure under the next phase of JNNURM.

The Empowerment Committee includes the five Corporation Mayors, who boycotted the meeting in protest against, what they claimed, was the dominance of officials and the sidelining of democratically elected representatives. Mayor K. Chandrika told The Hindu that the tenders should be awarded now as the funds would lapse in March 2014

Ajit Kumar, KSUDP project director, explained that tenders had to be recalled as the verification of estimate costs revealed that they were on the higher side. For instance, as per the 2012 Schedule of Rates, the cost of stoneware pipes is Rs. 65 a unit and the estimate prepared by contractors quoted Rs. 97. This would run into crores of rupees. Moreover, even if they were to award tenders immediately, the monsoon would impede any development and therefore they can use those two months to recast the estimates and analyse the bids.

RMC approves Rs2 cr for prettier ponds

The poorly-maintained ponds in the State capital might get a facelift in 2013-14, as the Ranchi Municipal Corporation on Wednesday sanctioned Rs2 crore for renovation and beautification of the water bodies this financial year.

The amount was sanctioned at the first meeting of the newly constituted board of the civic body held on Wednesday. The board proposed budget for the financial year 2013-14 which provided for an expenditure of Rs52.32 crores against an income of Rs60.49 crore.

In a bid to provide “convenient and cost-effective’ transportation to commuters, the civic body has decided to buy 10 low-floor AC/diesel buses and 20 standard non-AC/diesel buses. Taking a note of dysfunctional electric crematorium, RMC sanctioned Rs15.6 lakhs for energy and other expenses of the crematorium and also Rs17.20 lakhs were sanctioned for fogging machines.

As per the provisions under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) RMC sanctioned 25 per cent of its income (Rs9.33 crores) for basic service to the Urban Poor. The amount will be spent in mounting vapour lights on electric poles, repairing roads, water supply pipes, drains and constructing public toilets.

In the meeting the RMC iterated its resolve to make available water connection to every household and decided to sanction water connection with any proof of identity and made it clear that users will not be required to submit their holding numbers for getting water connection, which hitherto was mandatory.

“Any identity proof will serve the purpose. To mark the decision to sanction water connection without asking for holding numbers we are going to issue water connection on the basis of new provisions to at least one user on Thursday at 11am,” said deputy mayor S Vijayvargiya.

Besides, RMC also sanctioned Rs55 lakhs for construction of roads and Rs10 lakhs each for construction of drains and culverts across the city.

The board also took a conscious decision to sanction Rs6 lakhs for issuing gloves, boots and uniforms to its labourers.

With a view to ensure that rickshaw-pullers could reap maximum benefit of the welfare schemes run by Government the civic body decided to issue licences to them.

The foot path vendors are one of the major sources of traffic nuisances.

In order to organise and place them in a certain place the corporation has chosen 13 places in city and is developing them as vending zones. A sum of Rs36 lakhs has been sanctioned for raising amenities at the vending zones.
