Desiltation campaign in East Corpn

NEW DELHI, 14 MAY: With barely a month left for the arrival of monsoon, all three Corporations seem to be indulged in sorting out the much dominated problem of desiltation of drains in the city.

Today East Corporation Mayor, Mr Ram Narayan Dubey said, “East Corporation is preparing itself for the monsoon. Wherein to ensure proper and timely desilting of drains before the monsoon, elected representatives and senior functionaries of the Corporation will begin a 15-day inspection campaign of desiltation works which will continue till the completion of work. The desiltation of drains for the monsoon season will be completed by May 31."

According to the Mayor, the desiltaion work had begun on April 1. Provision of pumps at vulnerable points and establishing control rooms which would work round the clock is being made.

Chairman, Standing Committee, Mr Sanjay Surjan, informed that under East Corporation jurisdiction, there are 244 drains which are more than 4 feet deep and wide. “They are being desilted by the Engineering Department with the assistance of JCB, bobcat machine, pocklain machine and truck loader. A total of 465 drains are less than 4 feet deep and wide, which are being cleaned under the supervision of area sanitation inspectors using departmental resources. All covered drains are being desilted with the help of super sucker machines. Desilting of street gratings and bellmouths on roads is being done by sanitation staff,” he said.

The Corporation has identified eight vulnerable points where waterlogging usually occurs.

These included Railway Pull, Near Sabzi Mandi, J J Buland Masjid, Saboli Khadda and Meet Nagar in Shahdara (North).

In Shahdara (South), the identified areas are near Dullupura temple, Railway Colony, Mandawali, Mukesh Nagar Kaccha Nala and Transit Camp, Khichdipur. Arrangements have been made to meet the situation of waterlogging by the department staff and pump sets, added the official.

Leader of House, Mr B B Tyagi, said that a 24X7 helpline number "155303" will be active from June 15 to deal with the problem of waterlogging. In East Delhi, there are 21 permanent pumping stations.

To tackle waterlogging, 100 portable pumps are available which will be stationed at identified areas. Control rooms of both the Zones in the area, Shahdara (South) and (North), will have five each portable pumps to act on the complaints received on the helpline, said Mr Tyagi.

Couple of days back the North and South Corporations had held a meeting where they accepted that the desilting is a serious issue which has been discussed but the outcome is not good as the media never highlighted the issues.

Hence this year the Corporation has decided to take extraordinary step for solving the problem.

Sewage treatment plant to stop untreated waste from flowing into Lonar lake

PUNE: After years of concerted efforts by scientists, activists and college students, untreated sewage will stop flowing into the Lonar lake in Buldhana district.

A small capacity sewage treatment plant has been set up to treat the waste water before it drains into the lake, the world's oldest meteoric crater. Around 52 acres of farm land surrounding the lake have been acquired by the forest department as fertilisers and pesticides used by farmers leaching into the soil had resulted in the decline of Lonar's alkalinity. It is the third largest salt water lake.

Sudhakar Bugdhane, an expert on Lonar, said, "We have been working with the Lonar Municipal Council to solve the problem for several years. Efforts by several individuals and organisations who have been studying the crater have led to the installation of a sewage plant. It is good news for the scientists who study the lake, as it will no longer get polluted."

Earlier, waste water from Lonar town was drained into the crater which polluted the lake. The drainage water became a threat to the eco-system of the lake, which some activists and non-governmental organisations had recommended for UNESCO's world heritage site.

A group of activists from Khagol Vishwa in Pune has been studying the lake for several years, found some organisms in it that were unnatural to its ecosystem. Mayuresh Prabhune, a member of Khagol Vishwa said, "Although this is a small step towards the improvement of the historical lake, it is a start."

Prabhune added that in order to conserve the lake, there are several other steps that must be undertaken. There are heritage temples located around the lake that need immediate attention and illegal construction round the lake must be stopped, he said.

Greater Noida to get its first sewage treatment plant

Greater Noida to get its first sewage treatment plant

GREATER NOIDA: The city will finally get its own sewage treatment plant (STP) as construction of the first 146MLD unit has been completed. The plant is expected to become functional by next week. Constructed at a cost of Rs 500 crore, the STP is based on the modern Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology and the Authority will use the treated water for irrigation and construction purposes.

Though Greater Noida was formed in 1991, the city is yet to get a sewage treatment plant. Till a few years ago, all untreated waste was being discharged into the Hindon River. The Authority has of late been treating this discharged waste with chemical oxidation, an extremely slow process.

While work on the sewage plant had begun over three years ago, the authorities had to halt the work for almost a year following an Allahabad high court order restricting all development work in the city till the Master Plan 2021 was cleared by the NCR Planning Board.

"Due to planned development all sectors in the city have been provided with underground sewerage, but even after 20 years no STPs could be constructed. However, the new plant is finally ready and will become operational in the next few days. The installation of the state-of-the-art plant will not only guarantee a clean environment, ensure better quality of treated water and stop the use of groundwater for irrigation, but will also prevent further pollution of the Hindon to a great extent," an official said.

The Authority has also notified seven more STPs with upgraded technology at various spots across the city and all the new units have also been notified in the improvised Master Plan 2021.

The Authority has now proposed to become a 'zero discharge city' by 2021. The proposed STPs that will treat 414MLD of waste will come up at Phase-II, Ecotech 6, Tech Zone, Ecotech 2, Sector 1, Ecotech 3 and Kasna.

"The population of Greater Noida is constantly increasing. Besides the new development projects will result in additional population. Keeping this in mind, the new STPs are being developed. The new plants will take care of the sewer problem for the next 20 years and can serve a population of 25 lakh," the Authority official said.

Corporators seek cleaning of drains in city

ALLAHABAD: A meeting of corporators and Allahabad Municipal Corporation officers was organised at the zonal office of Allahpur in which corporators put forth various demands, including cleaning up of drains of the city to solve the problem of water logging in the rainy season. They also demanded cleaning up of the choked sewer lines of the city.

Municipal commissioner R Vikram Singh discussed the plan for cleaning the drains and directed an AMC engineer to take suitable measures to solve the problem.

The coporators also raised the matter of repair of all the pumps of pumping stations of Buxi Bund, Allahpur, Morigate Daraganj, Baluaghat Chachar Nala, Mumfordganj and other pumping stations before the rainy season.

Corporator Shiv Sevak Singh said developmental work in the wards had come to a standstill, therefore, measures should be taken to start work of at least Rs 5 lakh in each ward of the city. This demand has also been passed through a resolution in the sadan and executive council meeting. Corruption that has seeped in the work culture of Allahabad Municipal Corporation should also be removed. AMC administration conceded to the demand of starting the work of about Rs 5 lakh in each ward as per the resolution passed by the sadan and the executive council.

The corporators also demanded that the old house owners should be given concession of about 25, 32½ and 40% in house tax as per the rules. The municipal commissioner said he was ready to give concession in house tax as per rules during the present financial year of 2013-14. But, there is possibility of financial problems if concession in house tax is provided for the year 2011-12 and 2012-13. Shiv Sewak Singh objected to this and demanded that house owners be given concession as per the rules even in the year 2011-12 and 2012-13. Many corporators of the city including Shiv Sewak Singh, Kusum Lata Gupta, Chandra Shekhar, Dinesh Gupta and others participated in the meeting.
