Kozhikode corporation to carry out cancer screening for women

KOZHIKODE: The city corporation will conduct door-to-door cancer screening for women in a bid to reduce the number of cases here.

The civic body has decided to extend the ambitious Jeevanam project of Kudumbashree Mission to the entire corporation covering around 3.5 lakh women.

The survey will begin in August to identify women suffering from breast and uterine cancers.

The civic body will allot Rs 30 lakh for the project in June. Kudumbashree Mission envisaged the project in the wake of increase in number of cancer cases among women.

The project also aims at providing free treatment to those suffering from cancer.

The Jeevanam project was initiated by the district Kudumbashree Mission with the help of Malabar Cancer Centre, Malabar Cancer Care Society, Kozhikode Medical College and Indian Medical Association with the active participation of the civic body on a pilot-basis in 2012.

Eksat, HRD Training and Research Institute, Kozhikode entrusted with the coordination of the project provided training to 2,500 volunteers to conduct the survey.

Kudumbashree members during the survey asked the women to conduct self-examination of their body and to provide information about the symptoms.

Trained volunteers made a profile of each women collecting information from them and asked those who were having symptoms of cancer to attend medical check-ups conducted by experts in the field.

Kozhikode corporation Kudumbashree project officer Ramsi Ismail said Rs 6.13 lakh had been spent during the first phase of the project for the survey and the medical check-up.

"The project targeted women from poor families in the first phase. Though the survey had intended to cover around 4 lakh women, many of them did not attend the medical check-up conducted after the survey. The second phase will cover the entire female population in the corporation irrespective of their economic background,'' he said.

K K Muhammed Faisal, district Kudumbashree Mission coordinator, said that the civic body has expressed keenness to expand the scheme.

"A joint meeting of Kerala State Social Security Mission, Medical College, Cancer Care Society, District Kudmbashree Mission, City Corporation and experts will be held in June to decide what can be done to those who detect with cancer,'' he said.

"We have referred 210 women in the corporation limit for the final medical check-up. The result of the final tests will be made available in June,'' he said.

PMC push to train women cops on self defence

Despite the proposal getting rejected in past, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has once again pushed for a proposal to train women cops on self-defence. In a proposal tabled in the women and child welfare committee, the civic administration expressed the need to train women cops on self defence. "There are around 5,000 girl students in secondary schools run by civic body. It would be good to train them on self defence in a three-month training period," it said.

The administration said the 200 master trainer should be trained by the civic body so that they train other women in the city for the same. "The selection of candidates should be done through social organisations on the set criteria. If the women recommended by social organisations fail to fulfil the criteria of physical fitness then the remaining seat of the total 200 should be used to train women cops," it said.

Earlier, the elected representatives had set aside the suggestion of civic administration to train 150 women cops on self-defence who were to later train women across the city. The civic administration has invited expression of interest from organisations willing to carry out the responsibility of the civic administration to which 17 responded. The administration selected three organisations to provide 50 representatives and decided to shortlist 150 representatives from the police department.

At last there’s some solace in sight for women and girls. The Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation (KSWDC) is all set to introduce the first of its kind ‘she-toilets’ in the city.

The facilities will come up at important locations in the city by June, this year.

The state of the art toilets are meant exclusively for women.

Apart from being eco-friendly, these women-friendly toilets will be mobile. They will be equipped with  diaper-changing stations for babies, sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators along with self-washing and sterilization functions.

Kochi is the second city in the state where the project is being implemented by the KSWDC. It is supported by the Department of Social Justice. Thiruvananthapuram boasts of 23 such she-toilets installed at tourist sites and bus stands.

According to officials with the KSWDC, the she-toilet at Napier Museum is a big hit in the Capital city. “The Napier Museum sees hundreds of visitors on a daily basis, the majority of whom are women. Since there were many complaints regarding the dearth of adequate toilet facilities for the women along with the staff, we decided to set up one on the museum premises. It has also proved to be successful at other locations,” said a KSWDC spokesperson.

In Kochi, the she-toilets are expected to come up at Marine Drive and the KSRTC complexes. If proved successful, it will be installed in many other locations. The waste decomposing will be through bio enzymes and the used water will be recycled for future use.

The toilets have common facilities such as automatic payment collection, automatic door opening, ‘busy’ and ‘free’ display boards and an automatic platform cleaning system.

The technology-driven toilets will be more comfortable as it will not be prone to human errors, the officials said.

The operations of the toilets would be controlled and monitored from a remote location using GPRS technology.

The control room will receive automatic SMS alerts in case of emergencies such as exhaustion of water tank or filling-up of septic tank. Security aspects will also be taken care of.

Currently, the Kochi Corporation has installed bio-toilets in Kacheripaddy, Fort Kochi and the Town Hall. Also, bio-toilets have been installed at the Ernakulam KSRTC stand, using the MLA funds.

If the project proves succesful in the city, it will be implemented in other parts of the district.

The KSWDC has also plans to set up such toilets in  Kozhikode, Malappuram, Pala and Pathanapuram as part of the second phase of the project.
