CHENNAI: Sixty-one kindergarten teachers of Corporation schools have armed themselves with a new degree — Diploma in Montessori Education. Thanks to the training organised by the Rotary Club of Madras East, Corporation of Chennai and Centre for Montessori Training, they now have more lessons on how to make the classroom vibrant.

At an event here on Monday, Mayor M. Subramanian gave away certificates to the teachers from the 10 Corporation zones. He said that kindergarten sections in Corporation schools were started during his tenure.

It was a joyous occasion for everyone in the auditorium.

For the teachers, all with seven to 12 years of experience, it was an achievement as they juggled school and attended this course for around 11 months to develop new skills, knowledge and attitude towards the teaching process.

For the team from the Centre for Montessori Training, a unit of Kalvi Trust for Research and Education, it was the first time they prepared Montessori content in Tamil. “Montessori thoughts are different but when you have teachers who are ready to accept them as part of learning programme, it’s great,” said Meenakshi Sivaramakrishna, president, Indian Montessori Centre.

“Our emphasis was on equipping teachers with life skills and hygiene practices such that they look at the child as someone who is learning and that they have to be guides rather than teachers,” said Uma Shankar, managing trustee, Kalvi Trust for Research and Education.

QUALITY FIRST: The Corporation has laid down strict norms for supply of schoolbags.

CHENNAI: The implementation of a new scheme to provide schoolbags free of cost to stdents of Chennai Corporation schools is expected to be further delayed. With the suppliers not conforming to tender specifications, the Corporation has called for bids again.

The decision to provide schoolbags was announced in the Corporation Budget in February. Subsequently, the civic body invited bids for supply of over one lakh schoolbags. A total of 11 manufacturers and dealers had participated in the tender and some of them passed the financial bid stage.

However, when the samples were tested, they did not conform to standards. In the new tender, valued at Rs.1.56 crore, the Corporation has specified different sizes for different classes and that all the bags should have double stitching. It also said that front pockets, nylon handles and pockets to hold water bottles must be provided. The successful bidder is required to supply bags within 15 days of signing the agreement.

FOR GOOD HEALTH: Coimbatore Corporation teachers practising yoga at the civic body’s school at Sidhapudur in the city.

COIMBATORE: Along with the efforts to improve hygiene in its schools, the Coimbatore Corporation has begun an exercise simultaneously for the good health of the teachers and students.

In association with Isha Yoga Centre, the Corporation has drawn up a plan for yoga training for the teachers and students.

The first phase of the yoga and meditation programme for about 550 teachers began on Monday. The training for the teachers is being given at three schools: the Corporation Higher Secondary School at Sidhapudur, the Girls’ Higher Secondary School at Ramakrishnapuram and the Girls’ High School at R.S. Puram. The training will be provided for one-and-a-half hours after class hours on working days and for seven hours on Saturday. The next phase of training for about 300 teachers will be held in January or February next year. “We will begin the training for the students in the third week of this month,” Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra said on Wednesday. “We will start with about 2,000 students. And, the entire strength of 30,000 students [in 85 schools] will be covered in phases,” he said. Chairman of the Corporation Council’s Standing Committee on Education, Parks and Playgrounds R. Kalyanasundaram said the yoga programme had been approved by the committee last year. But, it did not progress beyond some sessions in a couple of schools.

After Mr. Mishra took over as the Commissioner, the scheme was given a fresh impetus, Mr. Kalyanasundaram said.

The Commissioner said the training could be given to the teachers first, so that they could, in turn, train the students.
