New courses introduced at Corporation ITI

CHENNAI: Three new courses – Fitter, Electrician and Motor Vehicles Mechanic – were launched at the Chennai Corporation ITI in Lloyds Colony on Thursday by Mayor M. Subramanian. Presenting identity cards to 116 students, he said a total of Rs. 98 lakh had been spent on purchasing new equipment and machines for the ITI.

He said large,reputed firms would be invited to conduct campus recruitment, before the end of the course. “There are many car manufacturing companies around the city who will require fitters and motor vehicle mechanics. We will also make provisions for industry-institute interaction so that these students from underprivileged families can do better.”

The ITI was established in 1999 when Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was the Mayor. The building had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.11 crore.

The ITI also offers computer programming and plumbing courses.

Member of Parliament T.K.S. Elangovan expressed happiness that the civic body had cleaned up a garbage dumping yard at the spot and constructed an ITI.

TN aims at 80 pc literacy rate


CHENNAI: The State government was taking effective steps to increase the literacy rate of Tamil Nadu from the present 78 per cent to 80 per cent by 2012. This was stated by the School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu here on Tuesday

Addressing the Internationial Literacy Day celebrations here, the Minister said literacy rate of Tamil Nadu stood at 73.45 per cent in 2001 and it had reached 78 per cent now thanks to the efforts of the Directorate of non-formal and adult education as well as the

Directorate of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

The national project for increasing women’s literacy would be implemented in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri in the first phase, he said and added that the move would help the women in Tamil Nadu on increasing the literacy rate of women on par with men.

Observing that freedom movement of the nation was recorded properly giving details about what had happened time to time, the Minister said efforts should be taken to record the progress made in women’s emancipation in the country.

Chennai Mayor M Subramanian said the Chennai Corporation had adopted 820 needy children and providing educational opportunities for them.

School Education Secretary M Kutralingam, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Project Director R Venkatesan and Director of School Education, P Perumalsamy, Director, Directorate of Non-formal, M Lakshmi and Adult Education and senior officials also participated.

Earlier, a rally was taken out from Doordarshan Kendra to mark the International Literacy Day that was flagged off by Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni.

Decision taken following estimates panel’s surprise visit

 


Officials requested to allocate at least a portion from the corpus of Rs. 10 crore to the school

The school functions from two rooms for 172 students studying from Standard I to VIII


Tirupur: Deviating from the planned itinerary, the Legislature Committee on Estimates carried out a surprise inspection at the Corporation Middle School in Mannarai here on Wednesday following allegations of neglect to the institution by the authorities concerned.

War footing

After the examination, the Chairman of the Estimates Committee, Kuthalam K. Anbazhagan (MLA of Kuttalam), told reporters that the check, had revealed the necessity to expand the infrastructure in the institution on a war footing.

“We have suggested to the Corporation administration to take steps to commence the construction of new building for the school at the earliest on the plot which has been donated by a well-wisher, to avoid the congestion on the present premises,” he said.

The Committee members noticed during the visit that the school functions from two rooms for 172 students studying from Standard I to Standard VIII. Mr. Anbazhagan added that the Corporation officials had been requested to allocate at least a portion from the corpus of Rs. 10 crore sanctioned by the State Government for infrastructure development of Tirupur Corporation-run schools, to the Mannarai School for its immediate maintenance.

Deep freezers

Earlier, the Estimates Committee visited Palladam Taluk Office, various fair price shops, two government schools in Nallur, Chavadipalayam Primary Health Centre and Kangayam Government Hospital.

Medical officials at Kangayam Government Hospital pointed out to the Committee the need to establish deep freezers for the hospital’s mortuary.

Presently, the hospital, which carries out at least 20 autopsies a month, is lacking the facility to store the body overnight. The Committee assured the doctors and the public that the matter would be taken to the notice of the Government.

Collector C. Samayamoorthy accompanied the six-member Estimates Committee during the day-long visit. Senior officials were also present.
