No passing remark: Corporation Commissioner S.Sebastine felicitating students for successfully passing public examinations at a function held in the city on Thursday.

MADURAI: At a time when many parents have a dilemma over choosing a tuition centre for their children and providing various facilities at home to make a congenial atmosphere to study, the children of conservancy workers have to do everything on their own while their parents are busy taking care of the hygiene of the city.

In an effort to instil confidence in these students, a function was organised to appreciate their efforts. Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine distributed certificates and shields to students who had passed X and XII public examinations. Thirty students were felicitated at the function in which B. R. Ambedkar’s words, “educate, agitate and organise,” were recalled.

Mr. Sebastine congratulated the students and said that given the appalling conditions in which they had to prepare themselves for the examinations, a pass mark itself was equivalent to the achievement of a topper.

He was confident that the day was not far off when the students of conservancy workers would be toppers in every sphere of education.

The government too had been playing its role to perfection by providing the much-needed economic assistance to pursue education, Mr. Sebastine said.

A discussion was also held and guidance on pursuing higher education given to the students.

G. Mayilanandam, Commissioner, Income Tax, and K. Sakthivel, Chief Engineer, Corporation, were present. The function was organised by G. Jayaraj of Annai Teresa Rural Development Trust.

Rehabilitate: Corporation school students take part in a rally organised by World Vision India in collaboration with Sarva Siksha Abhiyan in Chennai on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: A rally to create awareness of child labour and education for children was organised by World Vision India in collaboration with Sarva Siksha Abhiyan here on Tuesday. It was part of the Chennai street children prevention and rehabilitation project.

Students of various Corporation schools participated in the rally. “As the mechanic shops in Chintadripet attract many children, the number of child labourers in the locality is relatively higher,” said S. Basavaraj, Child Development Coordinator, World Vision India.

Parents who are reluctant to send their children to school have to be persuaded by teachers of schools nearby, said Catherine Paduva, a teacher who participated in the rally.

“Child labourers are also provided pieces of advice on the advantages of going to school,” she added. Some students who had obliged and started coming to school, however, are continuing to work as child labourers during holidays, said Mr.Basavaraj.

Drop out of students has been reducing in the schools of the locality because of government intervention, said Ms.Paduva.

Awareness of education has to improve among all slum-dwellers. The government is taking measures on creating awareness among the parents also, said Mr.Basavaraj.

WORRIED: Students of Kamaraj Corporation Higher Secondary School in Pettai near Tirunelveli who submitted a petition to Tirunelveli Collector R. Palaniyandi on Monday.—

TIRUNELVELI: A group of students from Corporation Higher Secondary School at Pettai near here submitted a petition to Collector R. Palaniyandi on Monday during the weekly grievance day meeting, appealing to him to continue the general machinist vocational section in their school.

The students said the section, having a Rs. 1 lakh-worth lathe, drilling machine, grinding machine and other equipment, had produced a school topper _ P. Muthupattan _ who had scored 1068 out of 1200 in the recently declared Plus Two results.

At a time when the students are coming forward to join this course, some teachers and school officials are allegedly discouraging them.

Even after the Director of School Education had assured them that the course would not be discontinued, the school administration was working overtime to close it, the students alleged.
