Government schools may get solar power

Vellore Corporation plans to install solar power systems at Corporation schools, for which a feasibility study would be conducted shortly.

The Education Committee attached to the Corporation had identified five schools, including three high schools in Kosapet, Salavanpet and Kaspa, located at important locations in the city, to provide generators.

President of the committee and councillor of ward-41, K Suriya Achari, said, “At the recent Education Committee meeting, officials discussed the feasibility of providing Corporation schools with generators. However, some of them had noted that this would lead to the issue of maintenance of the generators. So, we decided to install solar power systems, which was also being encouraged by the State government.”

Corporation Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran said a feasibility study would be conducted in the schools once the examinations were over. At schools where the study gives positive results, the Corporation has decided to carry out the installation work during the summer holidays and complete the work before the schools reopen for the next academic year.

Chennai: English medium would be introduced in 20 corporation primary schools

CHENNAI: English medium would be introduced in 20 corporation-run primary schools in the city.

It would be an option from class one, said mayor Saidai Duraisamy while announcing the civic body's budget for the year 2012-2013.

The Chennai Corporation had been realizing for a few years that their admissions had been dropping annually, because parents preferred to put their children in English medium schools.

The civic body had already set up around 99 English medium sections across the 40 primary schools. "Keeping in view parents' desire to offer English medium education for their children, we will introduce 20 English medium sections which will run along side the existing Tamil medium sections," said the mayor.

The budget for the year 2012-2013 like the previous year focuses on education and making students more fluent in English. Another announcement was construction of English language labs in 15 middle schools. The labs are expected to "enhance the language skills of students such as listening, speaking, reading and writing in English."

Ten new kindergarten schools will also be started by the civic body.

All-round development of children was also kept in mind this year.

The civic body would identify and train 10 students with potential in swimming and athletics to participate in national level meets. Picnics to places like Dakshin Chitra would be organized to impart knowledge on art and culture.

Corporation teachers’ association plea to Govt.

Staff Reporter

The Coimbatore Corporation All Teachers Association has urged the State Government to rectify the anomalies in the TNTET (Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test). In a statement issued here, association general secretary S. Devasahayam said that at present, an English teacher taking the TNTET had to prepare for Tamil paper, even though he/she was not going to teach the subject. With all those papers having equal weightage, a teacher cannot ignore any subject.

He also called upon the State Government to take up the calculation of Provident Fund from the Corporation. Already, the pension of Corporation teachers was being calculated and disbursed through the State Treasury.

The association pointed out that the Corporation teachers were now losing the seniority upon a transfer to a State Government school, even though recruitment for both was done through the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB). The association also wanted the post of a permanent Chief Educational Officer to be created for Coimbatore Corporation. At present, a Corporation School Headmaster was holding the additional charge of CEO. Mr. Devasahayam also wanted preference for candidates from Coimbatore while filling up vacancies in local schools.
