Chennai Corporation schools to be renamed

It is part of the Corporation's efforts to encourage more admissions to these schools


CHENNAI: All 282 Chennai Corporation schools will soon be renamed as ‘Chennai Schools'.

This is part of the Corporation's efforts to encourage more admissions to these schools, improve their standard and eliminate psychological barriers in parents' mind.

All the schools would be painted in identical colour, Mayor M.Subramanian told the council meeting on Monday.

One school in each of the 10 zones would be developed into a ‘School of Excellence,' which would be on a par with those run by the Central government.

Admission to these schools would be through a special test.

Sixty-seven high schools and higher secondary schools run by the civic body would soon have a library each.

The Corporation would also establish a special school in north Chennai for hearing and speech impaired students.

Primary school teachers would be trained in abacus method to help the children understand maths better. On a trial basis, Maths lab would be set up in two schools — one each in north and south Chennai.

Scheme

The scheme of providing uniform, bags and shoes free of cost to students of classes I to 12 would be extended to cover 2,100 kindergarten schools students too.

About 61,000 children studying in classes 6 to 12 in the Corporation schools would get free geometry and stationery boxes this year. Besides opening six new community colleges, an employment information centre would be started for corporation students.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will soon distribute free school bags to 1.05 lakh students. Mayor M.Subramanian, who announced this at a preparatory session for students of class 10 on Tuesday, said that the bags have been procured at a cost of Rs.1.04 crore.

He also said that the civic body had planned to conducted motivational programmes for students of classes 10 and 12 from the next academic year on a regular basis. Mr.Subramanian said that career counselling would also be a part of the programmes.

He said that the number of students of Chennai Corporation schools taking the 10th public examinations has increased over the years. In 2006 there were 8,700 students. This number has gone up to 9,986 this year. He also said that the pass percentage in 10th and 12th had also improved considerably.

Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni urged students apply their minds while taking the examinations and read and understand the questions before attempting them.

IIT-Kanpur Chairman M. Anandakrishnan gave four points for students to remember.

They are: students must keep in mind the link between the subject and its practice in daily life; they must develop their skills; they should not concentrate only on one field and that they must try and aim for higher education outside the State.

Orator Suki Sivam asked students to speak in English and not be afraid to make mistakes. He asked teachers to simplify lessons so that students can understand easily.

Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax V. Nandakumar, said that education brought with it self realisation and self respect.

Director Institute of Human Resources Management T.K.Chandrasekaran said that while studying for their examinations students must take regular breaks, write down answers and see and revise.

Free spectacles for Corporation school students

Students of Chennai Corporation Primary School, MGR Nagar, try out the new shoes distributed by the civic body on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: Spectacles will be given free of cost to 4,000 students of Chennai Corporation schools soon to correct refractive errors, Mayor M. Subramanian said here on Wednesday.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would participate in the function to distribute spectacles under the Kalaingar Kannoli Scheme, he added.

Speaking at the launch of free shoe distribution scheme for 35,447 students of primary classes, Mr. Subramanian said that the civic body had implemented many schemes for the benefit of children studying in its schools.

The free shoe scheme would cost the Corporation nearly Rs.28 lakh.

He said that the free shoe scheme was launched after it was found that a large number of students came to school barefoot.

To ensure quality of shoes, samples of black leather shoes were sent to Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, he added. Free school bags would soon be distributed to the students. Stating that the civic body’s English medium classes were doing well, he urged parents to enrol their wards in Corporation schools. Mr. Subramanian said that on February 23 the civic body would conduct a motivational programme for 13,000 students of classes 10 and 12 at Valluvar Kottam.

Deputy Mayor R. Sathyabhama, Deputy Commissioner (Education) M.Balaji and leader of Opposition Saidai P.Ravi participated.
