Corporation gets integrated monitoring system for efficient delivering

MADURAI: A monitoring-cum-control centre, a centralised system for monitoring all the works of the Madurai Corporation for efficient delivering, set up at a cost of Rs 17.20 lakh was inaugurated by state minister Sellur K Raju on Friday and a corporation park, which was renovated by the Madurai chapter of the Soroptimist International, was also inaugurated.

This centralised system, which will be monitored 24x7 by the officials is expected to bring about efficiency in the system. Madurai Corporation commissioner Sandeep Nanduri said that four video walls had been installed into which all the software of the corporation had been integrated. The trucks, which would supply water to the wards that have not got pipeline connections, will be monitored using the GPRS system.

As Madurai is facing an acute water crisis, many private trucks have also been roped in to tackle the problem. The vehicles, fitted with GPRS systems would be monitored from the control room, right from the time water is loaded for distribution. The system will enable the diversion of some vehicles to the nearest locations if the water requirement there is more than their supply areas. The number of trips made by the water tankers, their distribution method, and any breakdown of the vehicle can be monitored through the system. The pipelines' system including the input/output to the treatment plant would be monitored through the system.

Streetlights are another facility which can be managed effectively through this control unit as the streets and their lights have been mapped, and each street light has been fitted with a sim card which will send a signal to the control room when it is working. The staff at the control room can rectify any faulty light from this tracking mechanism.

Grievances with regard to the Madurai Corporation are received through various ways, like social media, corporation website, representations to the commissioner, petitions received through the district collector's office or through email. All these grievances received would be segregated according to the concerned department and action taken report would be given to the petitioner also.

Meanwhile, the Bharathiar park of the Madurai Corporation on Alagarkoil Road, which was renovated at a cost of Rs 28.70 lakh with the help of the Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Madurai chapter of the Soroptimist International was also inaugurated on Saturday.

The park, which has been designed by architects Shamini Vignesh, has been paved with paver blocks, and is spread over an area of 10,000 sqft. A statue of poet Bharathiar with a book in his hand has been installed in the park. Though there are no seating arrangements, facilities have be made for both walking and sitting. The park has got a brightly coloured makeover with a rainwater harvesting system in place. The architects said that there is also a plan to paint poems by the poet and related pictures on the walls of the park.

The Coimbatore Corporation has discovered that the actual diesel consumption in lorries carrying waste to Vellalore is less than what it is being billed for. The civic body made the discovery when it carried a trial run fixing vehicle tracking devices on a few lorries.

Sources privy to the operation say that while the billing has touched 30 litres a day a lorry, the trial run has shown that the actual consumption is almost half – around 15 litres a day a lorry. The Corporation carried out the trial run by fixing the tracking devices on five lorries – one each a zone – under the Central Government’s Swachh Bharat scheme.

Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan says that he’s yet to see the report on the result of the trial run exercise. But he is certain that there will be reduction in diesel consumption if the civic body starts monitoring the vehicle movement.

The sources say that the savings will be massive given the fact that the Corporation alone operates close to 200 lorries a day moving nearly 800 tonnes waste to Vellalore. If each lorry’s diesel consumption were to come down from 30 litres to around 15 litres a day, the expenditure will also get halved.

The Corporation started off the vehicle tracking exercise by entering into an agreement with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. The latter will provide the SIM and also the tracking equipment. The Corporation will monitor the vehicle movement at its main office in Town Hall.

If the Corporation were to fix the tracking device on all its lorries, save on diesel and tighten the purse, it will be doing so at a time when it is finding it difficult to pay contractors for works that were executed months ago.

Corporation to develop app for basic services

Coimbatore Corporation will soon extend its services through mobile phone as well.

According to officials, the civic body is preparing a mobile application to help members of the public report grievances, complaints, access birth and death certificates and pay property tax and water charges.

The app, which would be available in both iOS and Android platforms was at present at the development stage.

The beta launch could be around mid-September and the final launch 15 days thereafter.

If residents were to report grievances or complaints, they would have the option of uploading pictures as well.


Plus, there would be alerts as well – disruption in water supply, tax payment reminders, etc. – the essential feature of apps.

The sources said that one of the important issues the developers faced was in giving users more choice of banks to pay property tax or water charges.

They were contemplating using a payment gateway, which would help optimise network usage.

Senior officials said that the Corporation also planned to develop and launch apps for Smart Cities project and a few other initiatives like Social Capital.

At present, the Corporation lets users pay taxes online using its web portal.
