Now, pay property tax on mobile phone

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Remitting your property tax has just got easier: the Chennai Corporation on Wednesday launched a system under which payment could be made using GPRS-enabled mobile phones. Launching the service, Mayor M. Subramanian said the civic body had introduced several modes of payment to improve property tax collection. The initiatives had proved beneficial, with the collection improving from Rs.231.94 crore in 2006-07 to Rs.323.80 crore in 2008-09. The target this fiscal is Rs.375 crore. “We are confident of achieving the target… till yesterday [Tuesday] property the tax collection was Rs.117 crore,” he added.

Assessees will have to send a text message ‘ngpay’ to the number 56767. They will then receive an SMS with a link to download an application form from ngpay, the private firm that provides the payment solution. This has to be followed by a one-time registration process, submitting details such as name, address and e-mail ID. Manoj Nair, senior vice-president of ngpay, said that once the bill number assigned to the assessee is fed into the application form, the property tax details would be available. The tax could be paid using Visa or Master credit cards or Visa debit cards. HDFC Bank customers could pay by giving their account number. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said an SMS giving the receipt number towards the payment made would be sent to the payee immediately. A copy of the receipt would be sent by e-mail and by post.

TN govt website gets user-friendly

CHENNAI: E-governance efforts of the Tamil Nadu government took another significant leap on Tuesday with its re-designed website going online.

The re-design is aimed at making the site more user friendly. Particularly, key information on many departments which was earlier buried under sub-heads have been brought onto the home page, so that visitors can easily browse through departmental information and online services.

Information is available about online services of taluk offices, building plan approvals, burial services, driving licences, e-filing of VAT returns, encumbrance certificates, property tax and water charges, among others. Separate columns have been created for documents, grievance redressal, welfare schemes, tenders, RTI and contacts.

The masthead of the website depicts the State as an Information Technology hub with an image of Tidel park, a Bharathanatyam dancer and the Mahabalipuram shore temple symbolic of its cultural heritage. In the foreground are the green fields stressing the importance given to agriculture. A slide-show of tourism spots, including Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai, is an attractive feature.

There is also a feedback option for visitors, welcoming comments and suggestions about the website. An improved user experience of government services awaits at www.tn.gov.in.

E-tender system launched in Coimbatore Corporation

Special Correspondent

Ten tenders were put on the website

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation launched on Saturday its online facility for its registered contractors to submit tenders for various development works.

Ten tenders for works costing over Rs.10 lakh were put on the website ( www.tntenders.gov.in). On accessing this page, one can find the latest invitations for tenders from various State Government agencies that run like a scroll under the head “Latest tenders”.

Any of the 171 registered contractors of the Coimbatore Corporation can click on the particular local body’s bid invitation. Using a login identity and a password given to them by the Corporation they can upload their tenders, Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra said after the launch of the facility.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam and officials of the Corporation were present at the launch and a discussion on the features of this facility.

“As per the guidelines from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, tenders for all the works costing above Rs.10 lakh should be submitted online,” the Commissioner said.

“This system is so transparent that it eliminates room for discrimination that is possible in the manual process. It promotes open competition. It is so secure that no official or rival contractor can see the bids. Only the bidder who uploads it can see because of the login identity and the password,” the Commissioner said.

The actual bidder could also get doubts clarified online and even add more details or issue corrections.

Officials of the Corporation, including the Commissioner, were also provided with a login identity and password. “I need to use these to access the site where I can publish the invitation of bids,” Mr. Mishra said.

The officials concerned with the tenders process in the Corporation and the contractors were trained on the use of this facility at the Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies.
