Contractors delaying road work to be blacklisted

The Corporation will begin to blacklist contractors who fail to complete road works in three months after the work order has been issued.

At a Corporation Council meeting, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said a number of contractors were delaying road works. “Delays of seven to eight months have been reported across the city. Contractors will get only three months to complete a road work, hereafter. We will penalise contractors for delay,” he said. The civic body has blacklisted a contractor who failed to complete work on stormwater drains connecting Chetpet lake and Cooum, delaying it by two years and affecting monsoon preparedness in many parts of the city.

Corporations to be reviewed every 3 months

TRICHY: In the wake of several city corporations missing deadlines and many projects lying unattended, senior corporation authorities at Chennai have come up with a proposal to monitor the progress of each corporation every three months.

According to senior officials at the Trichy Corporation, during a meeting chaired by Chandrakant B Kamble, commissioner of municipal administration, in Chennai last week, a decision was taken to review the performances of all corporations every three months. The decision was taken after it was found during the recent periodical review that the corporations had not fulfilled all the objectives required by the officials.

Speaking to TOI over phone on Tuesday, Kamble said the corporations were assessed on 330 objectives that went on for more than two months. He further added that people were trained about the assessment and field level officers were designated to complete the tedious process. An objective analysis was carried out and points were given to each corporation. Each corporation commissioner visited different regions and assessed them and a total six lakh data points were collected.

The corporations were assessed based on criteria like solid waste, sanitation, electricity, drinking water and several other essential things.

It may be recalled that among all the corporations, Trichy Corporation was awarded the best corporation by the state government on Independence Day, for fulfilling most of the objectives.

A senior official at the Trichy Corporation said, "Essential things such as drinking water being supplied to the localities and the litres of procurement are all being sent on a regular basis to the officials at Chennai." He further added that regular review meetings were conducted previously and the three-month review is a welcome move.

A corporation official in a lighter vein said the drive is similar to how a student is assessed in examinations in schools every three months. He also added that the process is going to be a big headache for the authorities concerned as they have to prepare periodical reports.

Corporation to tweak Ega theatre flyover plan, drop two arms

CHENNAI: The city corporation is likely to drop two arms from the proposed flyover connecting Ega Theatre and Valluvar Kottam.

The civic body on Tuesday held a meeting to discuss the feasibility of four proposed flyovers - between Ega Theatre and Valluvar Kottam junction; one connecting Arcot Salai, Saligramam and 80 feet Road junction at K K Nagar, and one between Kotturpuram, Madhya Kailash, and the last connecting T T K Road, St Mary's Road and Chamiers Road - with representatives from agencies such as TNUIFSL (Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited) and Metrowater.

A corporation official said they were considering drop the exit and entry points at Spurtank Road and Harrington Road in the Ega theatre flyover. "The project was to construct a 2.7km elevated corridor to help motorists from Ega theatre to Vallur Kottam in five minutes. This was also to decongest traffic in six junctions including Ega theatre, Chetpet, Sterling road, Nungambakkam High Road, Independence Day Park and Valluvar Kottam. But the points in Harrington Road and Spurtunk Road may add to congestion in nearby areas".

Meanwhile, the civic body had suggested an 'L'-shape design for the proposed flyover connecting Kotturpuram to Madhya Kailash. "We wanted to remove the traffic bottleneck at Madhya Kailash signal. The flyover will be connected to OMR".
