No reserved parking on public roads: HC

CHENNAI: Finding parking space in crowded Chennai is a task in itself without having bullies (read big business concerns) cordon off portions of public parking areas for their own use. But now your parking woes could ease as the Madras High Court has taken note of the problem, based on a public interest writ petition.

The court on Tuesday dire­cted the Chennai Corporation and the police to ensure that public parking areas are not reserved for private parties and that they are made available for public use.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam gave the direction, disposing of a petition by K Krishnamani, who contended that some companies, including public sector organisa­t­i­ons and banks, were encroa­ching on public roads by roping off private parking zones and employing security personnel to keep out the public.

The judges observed that a perusal of the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules made it clear that no private person was entitled to exclusive right to park his vehicle in such a notified public parking space as the Rules contemplated no such reservation.

“Therefore, it has to be held that collection of lumpsum licensee fees from private parties and exclusively earmarking of the notified public parking space for a private person is illegal,” the bench said.

THANJAVUR: K.Ashok Vardhan Shetty, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and S.Ramasundaram, Principal Secretary, PWD, on Wednesday inspected various places in Thanjavur town, where development works are to be taken up in view of the Millennium celebrations of the Big Temple to be held on September 25 and 26.

They held discussions with the officials on the works to be done including the Grand Anicut Canal where beautification of banks is to be taken up, old and Thiruvaiyaru bus stands where improvements are to be done, Samanthankulam which is to be desilted and renovated, the bridge across Grand Anicut canal near Big Temple which is to be widened, old buildings in Rajah Mirasudhar Hospital and Raja Rajan Mani Mandapam, which are to be renovate

P.Senthilkumar, Director of Municipal Administration, M.S.Shanmugham, Collector, M.Moorthy, CE, PWD, accompanied them.

Two contractors fined for collecting excess fee

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore Corporation has fined two contractors on charges of collecting excess fee at public convenience facilities.

A release from the civic body said the collection of excess fee came to light when a Corporation team, following complaints, conducted surprise inspections at the use-and-pay toilets at Singanallur bus stand and Pappanaickenpalayam.

A. Loganathan, Assisant Commissioner, East Zone, headed the inspection team.

He passed on the information to Anshul Mishram, Commissioner, who slapped Rs. 20,000 as fine.

Warning

He also warned the contractors that their contracts would be cancelled if they failed to comply with the rules that had been laid down.
