Project to help improve civic services in Tiruchi

Work is expected to be over in next few months

TIRUCHI: The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), an international organisation offering technical consultation, training, and information services for capacity building and support to local governments in the implementation of sustainable development, has taken up a project to benchmark the service level of the Tiruchi Corporation.

The benchmarking would be done for four major services of the Corporation – water supply, solid waste management, waste water treatment and storm water drains. The assessment would be carried out in a standardised form in terms of the existing infrastructure, the system of delivery, quality of the service and the percentage of coverage.

Tiruchi is one of the 25 cities selected across the country under the project taken up by the Union Ministry of Urban Development and the Water and Sanitation Programme of the World Bank. The Udhagamandalam Municipality is the other urban local body selected for the benchmarking in the State.

The ICLEI has been appointed as a consultant for carrying out the benchmarking for both the cities in Tamil Nadu, Soumya Chaturvedula, Manager, ICLEI, South Asia, Southern Centre, told The Hindu, here on Friday.

She along with Ashish Rao Ghorpade, Manager, South Asia, Southern Centre, and C. Sellakrishnan, Project Coordinator, ICLEI, held preliminary discussions with the Mayor S.Sujatha, Commissioner T.T.Balsamy and other officials on Thursday and Friday to discuss the modalities of the collection of data for the project.

The project is expected to be completed over the next few months.

Keep AC filters clean: Corpn

CHENNAI: Clean up the filters in your air conditioners. That is a key element in checking swine flu, according to a pamphlet issued by the Chennai Corporation.

Filters in air conditioners gather dust, minute particles and airborne pollutants, while circulating cool air in a closed area. If a swine flu infected person coughs or sneezes in an air-conditioned room, the virus may travel up to the filters and settle down there.

“The virus in the filter then starts circulating along with cool air,” Dr P Guhanatham, Chennai Corporation Health Officer, said.

Some of the other precautionary measures are frequent gargling with warm salt water and washing hands and nostrils regularly.

Besides the pamphlet, the Corporation has come up with posters to spread awareness about containing the disease.

Allaying fears of swine flu, Guhanathan said the situation was not as alarming as reported in the media.

According to him, out of 10,000 people tested for H1N1 virus in the last two days by the Corporation officials, only one had shown symptoms of the disease.

He said: “Even people with violent coughing, sneezing or running nose can move around in public places like cinema halls, hospitals, trains and buses with a mask.”

Ruling out all possibilities: Corporation doctors screening students of Adi Dravida Welfare Higher Secondary School at Periyamilaguparai for symptoms of swine flu as part of a special awareness campaign in Tiruchi on Friday.

TIRUCHI: The Corporation has launched a special drive to sensitise city residents to the A (H1N1) influenza, its symptoms and the preventive measures to be taken.

A team of Corporation doctors, led by the Health Officer, K. C. Cheran, conducted special camps in some of the schools on Friday to screen students for symptoms of swine flu. The camps were held at the Adi Dravida Welfare Higher Secondary School, Periyamilaguparai, Sacred Heart Elementary School, Sangilandapuram, St. Angel’s Middle School, Ponamalaipatti, and St. Philomena’s Higher Secondary School, Melapudur.

The students were also distributed pamphlets detailing the symptoms, preventive measures and the do’s and don’ts. Corporation officials said the screening camps would be held in more schools over the next few days.

Commissioner T. T. Balsamy, who inspected the screening camps, said the Corporation has printed 60,000 pamphlets for distribution to the city residents. Adequate preventive measures were being taken by the Corporation health wing to prevent the spread of the flu, he said.
