World-class road project kicks off

No private land to be acquired for project in Ashok Nagar

Nearly two years after the project was announced, Chennai Corporation will begin preliminary work on laying world-class roads in the city. The civic body will begin the tendering process for commissioning four of these world-class roads this week.

The State government has given administrative sanction for the first phase of the Rs.79-crore project that involves development of four roads in Ashok Nagar: Ashok Nagar 1st Avenue, 11th Avenue, 4th Avenue and Dr. Ambedkar Salai.

The civic body has asked Chennai Metrowater, telecom service providers and TANGEDCO to prepare estimates for shifting and redesigning utilities in the 3.21-km network.

“The project will be implemented without acquiring private land in any of the stretches,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.

A total of 31 roads have been identified for the development of ‘world-class’ roads in the city.

Works to be taken up in the four roads include commissioning of bicycle tracks, 10-feet-wide footpaths, bus shelters, bollards, 400-metre parallel parking on Ashok Nagar 11 Avenue, separate structure for cables and planting 425 new trees on a 1.5-feet wide tree line.

Last year, residents of roads such as Dr. Ambedkar Salai opposed the acquisition of land for the project. The consultant had originally prepared a detailed project report that called for acquisition of private lands to widen some stretches of the roads to achieve world-class standards.

The proposal was dropped after the civic body identified places of worship on stretches such as Dr. Ambedkar Salai which is only 14 m wide. The wider Ashok Nagar 11{+t}{+h}Avenue will have a bicycle track, the official added.

Actual work will have to be commissioned within a year, according to sources.

The project will also improve last mile connectivity to the proposed metro rail stations.

If Mayor Vijila Sathyananth’s assurance in the Council Meeting held here on Monday gets translated into action, two busy roads in the twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai will be widened soon to facilitate free movement of vehicles.

Responding to complaints from councillors at the meeting, Ms.Vijila said the S.N. High Road-Kulavanigarpuram stretch and the S.N. High Road-KTC Nagar stretch via Palayamkottai Gandhi Market would be widened in consultation with the district administration and the departments concerned. “After removing encroachments, pavements and storm water drains would be created on both sides of these roads. Medians would also be erected. Adequate funds would be earmarked for this exercise this fiscal,” said Ms.Vijila.

When Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam member Kamaludeen complained that many shops at Palayamkottai Gandhi Market were yet to be regularised by the Corporation, thus causing a huge revenue loss to the civic body, the Mayor said the officials concerned had been instructed in this connection.

Ms.Vijila assured the Council members that energy-saving LED lights would gradually replace the conventional streetlights in the City. The Mayor informed that planting of saplings under the ‘Green Nellai’ programme would begin on Tuesday (November 19).

The Council meeting decided to erect a memorial column for Tamil scholar Xavier Thaninayagam Adigal near the entrance of the Exhibition Grounds here.

Rs. 9.9 crore approved for works on Harrington Road

The Chennai Corporation has decided to use an alternative technology that will enable laying of concrete roads without disrupting traffic.

The Corporation Council on Thursday approved the use of slip form/fixed form concrete pavers in re-laying some roads to expedite the work without disrupting traffic in the area. The Council also approved Rs. 9.9 crore for the integrated development of Harrington Road, which is one of the roads used by thousands of vehicles travelling to the western suburbs from the city every day.

Formation of potholes due to the rains has been one of the causes of traffic disruption and congestion in Chetpet area and arterial stretches such as Poonamalle High Road. The concretisation of the stretch is expected to ease rush hour traffic congestion on many adjoining roads as well.

The other works to be taken up on the road include laying of granite footpaths, construction of stormwater drain and granite road median, and development of greenery and ducts for electrical cables and utilities. Depending on the success of the project, works on more roads are likely to be taken up.

Mayor Saidai Duraisamy on Thursday also announced the use of M60 grade of concrete to re-lay 100 bus routes and reduce the period of traffic diversions to 48 hours. As many as 69 bus routes that can be diverted to alternative routes will be re-laid using a lesser grade of concrete (M40) to save funds. The same grade of concrete will be used to develop 1,125 interior roads.

The concrete roads would last for more than 30 years and would not get damaged in the rains, an official said

A better technology will enable re-laying of the stretch with cement concrete without disrupting traffic for too long.
