Home loans given to slum dwellers

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation handed over loans to 76 beneficiaries from slums to build houses under the Basic Services to Urban Poor scheme.

The project is being implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

One of the infrastructure development projects being implemented in 63 cities under the mission is the one to make these slum-free.

Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai are the cities chosen from Tamil Nadu for the mission.

More than 12,000 houses are to be provided for people living in the slums that have come up along roads, railway lines and water bodies.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam handed over cheques for the loan amount to the beneficiaries at a function in the city on Monday. The beneficiaries were chosen from Wards 62 and 63.

While one section got Rs.28,000 another got Rs.28, 350 for each of the beneficiaries.

The total amount of loans provided was more than Rs. 21 lakh.

The Mayor said that out of the 12,630 houses to be provided under the project, 1.073 had been completed.

Work was under progress on 2,924 houses and work orders had already been issued for another 3,583. Now, 76 more had been cleared and loans provided, he said.

“The poor beneficiaries are extremely happy that they will get good houses along with basic amenities in their colony under this scheme,” he said.

A total of 4,747 houses to be constructed under Indra Awaz Yojana


THANJAVUR: A total of 4,747 houses were being constructed under Indra Awaz Yojana Scheme in Thanjavur district at a cost of Rs. 16.61 crore according to M. S. Shanmugham, Collector.

Speaking at the District Planning Committee meeting here on Tuesday, Mr. Shanmugham said that 1,233 Kacha houses would be improved at a cost of Rs. 1.84 crore this year in the district.

Sanitation programme

Under total sanitation programme a sum of Rs. 8.75 crore had been allotted to the district for construction of 35,000 toilets, the collector said.

He also appealed to local body representatives and officials to see that the community sanitation complex constructed at villages were put to use.

Under National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme, a sum of Rs. 47.35 crore had been allotted to take up 1,440 works.

The collector said that seventeen hours power supply was given to agriculture pumpsets. Selvi Sivagnanam, Chairperson of Thanjavur District Panchayat Council presided over the meeting.

Thenmozhi Jayabal, Chairperson of Thanjavur Municipality, S. P. Thamizhazhagan, Chairman of Kumbakonam Municipality, Priya, Chairperson of Pattukottai Municipality, P. Durairajan, Chairman of Thanjavur Panchayat Union, Rajaranthinam, Chairman of Sethubavachathiram panchayat union, Ranjanadevi Murugappan, Chairperson of Pattukottai Panchayat union participated in the meeting.

State unveils scheme for residential buildings

Meant for economically weaker sections in Chennai, suburbs

CHENNAI: The State government on Tuesday unveiled a scheme of additional floor space index (FSI) for residential buildings, meant for economically weaker sections, in Chennai and surrounding areas.

According to the scheme, an additional FSI of 50 per cent will be given to those buildings that have dwelling units of not exceeding 30 sq.m of floor area each. In the case of buildings with dwelling units of up to 50 sq.m. of floor area each, the additional FSI will be 30 per cent.

Suba Thangavelan, Minister for Slum Clearance and Accommodation Control, announced this while wrapping up a debate in the Assembly on the demands for grants to Housing and Urban Development department.

In respect of slum-dwellers who lost their homes while works of road widening or building bridges were being taken up, an additional FSI of not more than 20 sq.m would be given in the form of transferable development rights.

Many suburban localities of the Chennai Metropolitan Area were located in Tiruvallur district which were witnessing developments on a large scale. It had been decided to form a local planning authority for Tiruvallur and take steps for regulated growth.

As for the formation of Outer Ring Road, the Minister informed the House that land acquisition for the first phase of the proposed road had been completed except for about 250 metres. The length of the road in the first phase was 29.2 km from Grand Southern Trunk Road at Vandalur to Chennai-Tiruvallur High (CTH) Road. In the case of the second phase (CTH Road to Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panjetty (TPP) road over about 33 km), land acquisition had been completed for 15.3 km and the balance was likely to be completed this year.
