CM lays stone for Kovai projects

COIMBATORE: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday laid foundation stone for seven projects worth Rs 543 crore for Coimbatore district through video conferencing from Chennai.

The Chief Minister named certain projects carried out by the State government in the district such as Siruvani water project, bridge on Kovai-Dindigul Road, Anna University IT park and Rs 1469-crore Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission.

“The decision to construct Gandhipuram flyover was announced during the world classical Tamil conference,” he said. On Sunday, he laid foundation stone for Rs 14-crore one-km-long flyover which will cover Nanjappa Road, Cross Cut Road Junction, 100 Feet Road Junction and Sathyamangalam National Highway.

It was also announced that the Central Prison near the VOC Park would be shifted to a 75-acre land given by the Coimbatore Corporation at Vellalur in the city suburbs. The proposal was to construct a Semmozhi park in the 165-acre land which housed the Central Prison. As a first step, foundation was laid to construct a park in the 45-acre empty land on the prison compound at a cost of Rs 20 crore.

On renovation of Contour canal at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, he said the canal was built 50 years ago to bring water from Parambikkulam dam to Thirumoorthy dam. In course of time, the canal was damaged due to lack of maintenance.

During the centenary year celebration of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, it was decided to upgrade and extend it with new building. A Rs 50-crore project was approved in this regard to construct a tower building to avoid the fragmentation of the hospital buildings. The new tower building will include an additional 1000 bed inpatient facility as well as students hostel with a bed capacity of 250.

Buildings would be constructed for Anna University of Technology in 131-acre area at Somaiyampalayamin at a cost of Rs 67 crore, CM said. The Anna University Coimbatore will have affiliated colleges from nine districts, including Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur. The buildings will come up in a 44,600 sq ft area.

There was also a project to modernise the Coimbatore District Co-operative Milk Producers Union (Aavin) at a cost of Rs 2 crore with an aim to double the daily milk procurement.

Council gives nod for third and final phase of work

The second phase of construction is under way

Of 2.42-km work, 600 metres completed so far


Tuticorin: State Government has allotted funds to the tune of Rs. 4.30 crore for the third phase of Buckle Canal construction in Tuticorin. Presiding over the emergency meeting convened at Corporation council hall here on Monday, Mayor R. Kasthuri Thangam announced about the allocation of funds for continuing the infrastructural development of the canal.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors welcomed the announcement by thumping the desks. 

The council gave the approval for the third and final phase of construction work, to be taken up on a stretch of 1.1 km under the corporation limits.

The second phase of construction is underway. Of the 2.42 km work, 600 metres had been completed so far under phase two.

A sum of Rs. 7.5 crore had been set aside for the second phase of works.

The Mayor also gave her nod for tender disposal of relaying the road work, subsequently.

As for road infrastructure, the State government had sanctioned Rs. 20 crore. Since the season was rainy, roads would be re-laid from December 15. Prior to the road strengthening project, cement roads would be laid at eighteen places.

Works to this effect would be taken up in a span of a week. 25 noon meal centres would be established in various parts at an estimated cost of Rs. 75 lakh and an approval was also given for this.

C. Easwaran, AIADMK councillor of ward 32, said that residents could not get drinking water every two or three days in a week and it was being supplied once in six or even seven days.

The Mayor replied it was due to a breakdown in the main pipeline at Vallanad.

Maintenance works were being carried out and the problem would be solved at the earliest, Ms. Thangam said. With the help of tanker lorries, the residents, were supplied with water, she added.

S. Madasamy, DMK councillor of ward 37, sought the attention of authorities to stop burning the wastages in all wards.

He said the smoke caused pollution.

Thommai Yesuvadiyan, Deputy Mayor, P. Kubendran, Commissioner of Corporation, S.A. Rajagopalan, Executive Engineer of Corporation were present.

Chennai, Nov. 19: The state government has expanded the limits of Kanchipuram and Karur municipalities. Sevilimedu town panchayat and three village panchayats — Orikkai, Thenambakkam and Nathapettai have been merged with the Kanchipuram municipality.

The municipal administration and water supply department have also expanded the limits of Karur. Inam-Karur municipality, Thanthoni municipality and Senapiratty village panchayat are part of Karur town now. Similarly, Asaaripallam town panchayat, Peruvilai, Vadakku Soorankudi, Gandhipuram and Kariyamanickapuram village panchayats have been brought into Nagercoil municipality limits.
